In a commanding display, Manchester United secured their fourth win in five games in 2024 with a resounding 3-0 triumph over West Ham United. The Red Devils extended their unbeaten head-to-head record against the Hammers at Old Trafford to an impressive 16 league games.

The match kicked off with both teams displaying end-to-end action, with goalkeepers Alphonse Areola and André Onana being called into action early on. Manchester United took the lead when Casemiro intercepted the ball in the Hammers’ half, setting up Rasmus Højlund for a brilliant finish from the edge of the box.

Despite West Ham’s efforts to respond, the Red Devils almost doubled their lead just before half-time as Højlund narrowly missed a shot from a tight angle. The second half saw a goalkeeping switch for West Ham, with Łukasz Fabiański replacing the injured Areola. However, United quickly capitalized on this change, with Alejandro Garnacho’s deflected shot finding the back of the net, leaving Fabiański helpless.

While United sought a third goal, defensive vulnerabilities left them exposed at the back. West Ham had an opportunity to cut the deficit, but Diogo Dalot’s last-gasp block denied Jarrod Bowen a chance to score. In the final half-hour, United’s defense put up a solid performance, providing a platform for Scott McTominay to seal the victory in the 85th minute by setting up Garnacho for his second goal of the game.

Despite defensive frailties shown throughout the season, United’s backline demonstrated resilience in the later stages, securing their third clean sheet in 12 home league games this season. The win keeps Manchester United in contention for a top-four finish, with only eight points separating them from fourth-place Aston Villa.

This commanding performance by Erik ten Hag’s side sees them climb above West Ham in the Premier League table, with a comfortable 3-0 victory that marks their biggest home win of the season. The Red Devils now set their sights on a crucial clash with top-four hopefuls Aston Villa, while West Ham looks to bounce back against title challengers Arsenal at the London Stadium.

  • Meta CEO’s Apology Echoes Historical CEO Confessions

    By Joe Aura

In a recent Senate hearing, Meta CEO c found himself in the spotlight as he issued a public apology to families who claimed their children suffered harm due to social media content. The emotional and intense session has drawn comparisons to other historic CEO apologies, such as Bill Clinton’s acknowledgment of the Monica Lewinsky scandal and Steve Jobs’ response to the iPhone 4 antenna problem. As the world watches, these apologies reflect a common thread of public figures facing intense scrutiny, acknowledging mistakes, and expressing remorse.

Zuckerberg’s apology, delivered after intense questioning, resonates not only with an international audience but also with the Kenyan public. The societal impact of social media, particularly on children, is a concern shared globally. In Kenya, where social media usage is widespread, the implications of online safety for children are pertinent, making Zuckerberg’s apology relevant to Kenyan families.

The international audience is closely observing the consequences of CEO apologies on reputation, career, and legacy. While Clinton’s legacy remains tarnished, Jobs’ apology contributed to Apple’s image recovery. The repeated appearances of Zuckerberg before Congress prompt questions about the potential long-term impact on Meta’s standing and its influence on the global tech industry, with implications for Kenyan users. The hearing’s exploration of legislative initiatives to hold tech companies accountable extends concerns beyond the United States, resonating with Kenyans navigating their regulatory landscape. This ongoing debate emphasizes the urgent and complex need to address online safety on a global scale, including in Kenya.

The emotional testimonies from affected families resonate across borders, emphasizing the need for a collective effort to address the challenges posed by social media content. As the future of social media, regulation in the United States remains uncertain, but the global implications of such decisions are profound. For Kenyan and international audiences alike, the ongoing dialogue about online safety reflects the evolving relationship between technology, responsibility, and the well-being of users, particularly the younger generation.

  • “Kenya’s End Femicide Walk Sparks Controversy: Women’s Rep Faces Backlash”

    By Joe Aura,

    {Aurajoe6@gmail.com}

Demonstrations against femicide in major Kenyan cities have drawn hundreds, highlighting the urgency of addressing violence against women. Women’s Representative, Esther Passaris, faces criticism following the march, defending herself on social media amid accusations of insufficient action.

Esther Passaris, a key figure in Kenyan politics, found herself at the center of controversy after being booed during the End Femicide march. Passaris took to Twitter to address the criticism, stating that she became a “punching bag” for political frustrations, emphasizing her active involvement in planning the march from its inception.

However, the public reaction on social media was swift and critical. One individual “Lady Njeri Thorne Lovely” expressed concerns about Passaris’ perceived delayed response, suggesting the need for frameworks to combat the misogyny contributing to femicide. Other users accused Passaris of neglecting her role as Women’s Representative, urging her to use her influence effectively.

Moreover, others questioned Passaris’s priorities, asserting that her energy defending herself should be directed towards speaking out against femicide. Users like MUTINDA @snrMUTINDA and Zollz @zollz criticized Passaris for what they perceived as a lack of action and called for accountability.

The exchange on social media revealed a divide in public opinion, with some arguing that Passaris joined the cause too late, while others accused her of political opportunism. The disagreement highlights the complexity of leadership responses to such pressing issues and raises questions about the effectiveness of leaders in addressing femicide.

The controversy surrounding Passaris brings to light a broader issue—do leaders’ responses play a role in the persistence of femicide? Critics argue that delayed or insufficient action may contribute to the prevalence of such cases. The heated online exchange reflects the public’s frustration and demands for accountability from leaders.

  • Why ‘No’? Chris Xander’s Referendum Stance

    By Janet Wambua

Chris Xander Jackton Odhiambo, currently serving as a congressman in the School of Arts and Social Sciences, is a third-year student majoring in Education, English, and Literature. In a recent interview, he shared his primary reasons for advocating a “No” vote in the referendum, highlighting the disconnect between proposed changes and student interests.

“I wanted people to vote No because the proposals in that constitution do not represent their interests. Many were not aware of the public participation or the association enlightenment that occurred,” he explained. Odhiambo emphasized the importance of addressing issues before they become irreversible.

The referendum, a contentious issue, saw proposals that he believed did not align with student needs. “Raising the GPA for student leaders and moving the election to September were not priorities. Students face larger issues like medical cover, poor dining hall services, and the plight of needy students,” he noted.

Reflecting on his suspension from the house due to his opposition to certain proposals, Odhiambo expressed determination to prevent their passage. “We’re watching and sending a warning to the sponsors of those proposals. We need to curb self-interest and prevent the danger they pose to the institution,” he warned.

“My interests are in leadership. I love leadership. I think my entire service as a congressman, I have gathered much, learned, and been criticized as well, and I wouldn’t think of any better job or role in this institution but the position that I’m serving even up to now,” he emphasized.

His political journey at Daystar University stems from a desire to help people and use his influence for their betterment. “I love people and I’ve always wanted to use my influence to better the lives of people. I realized the only platform that can provide me with that opportunity is through politics and the realm of leadership,” he said.

He acknowledged the challenges he faced, including backlash from colleagues and high expectations from constituents. “My political life has always been one of sacrifice, and I’m very grateful and do not regret any step of the way,” he reflected.

Odhiambo’s journey is not only defined by challenges but also by moments of gratitude and camaraderie. The monthly allowances he receives from the school provide him with financial stability, offering reassurance even amidst delays in remittance from his parents.

Equally cherished is the retreat in Mombasa, where he enjoyed leisure time with colleagues and had the privilege of interacting with his mentor, the Vice Chancellor, for three days. Being addressed with titles like “Mheshimiwa” and “Mr. President” reflects a shift in perception, both at the university and back home, underscoring the recognition of his potential and leadership qualities. These experiences serve as pillars of motivation, reinforcing his dedication to effecting positive change and leadership in his community.

Challenges abound for student leaders, including financial expectations and criticism. Despite this, Odhiambo remains dedicated to his political journey, viewing it as a sacrifice for the greater good.

Questioned about the current administration, Odhiambo expressed disappointment with its handling of student affairs. “This regime has been incompetent, focusing on controversies rather than fulfilling promises,” he asserted.

Odhiambo acknowledged the complexities of his role as a legislature within this regime. He lamented being hindered from fulfilling his duties due to constraints imposed by the house leadership.  He emphasized the need for accountability and transparency, urging for a fresh start to address the shortcomings and usher in a new era of leadership characterized by integrity and commitment to the student community.

“If anything there are many holes that have been poked and it is this holes that have been poked that are supposed to be sealed so that new Sherrifs are brought in town, new brooms are brought in town to sweep clean,” he said.

Looking ahead, Odhiambo is focused on ensuring the failure of the constitution and pursuing meaningful reforms. “I have a blueprint for the association, and I have ambitions. God will see me through,” he affirmed.

The official voting for the referendum was scheduled for January 23, 2024. Voting links were provided, allowing participants to employ the designated secure link and access the Microsoft Outlook forms for voting. The result showed that the “No” votes had prevailed.

  • ICJ to Make Decision on Emergency Measures in response to Israel’s Genocide Accusations by South Africa

    By Samira Mohammed

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is scheduled to declare on Friday whether it will proceed with immediate sanctions against Israel in response to the genocide accusations made by South Africa during Israel’s Gaza offensive. In a statement released on Wednesday, the United Nations’ highest court revealed that a panel of 17 judges will deliver its decision on January 26 at 12:00 GMT in response to South Africa’s requests. South Africa’s Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor will attend the announcement in The Hague.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will rule on emergency measures that South Africa is requesting be taken in order to stop Israel from going any farther, rather than the main question of whether or not Israel is committing genocide. In order to avoid more grave and irreversible injury to the rights of the Palestinian people under the Genocide Convention, South Africa petitioned the International Court of Justice, often known as the World Court, to order an emergency suspension of Israel’s military assault in Gaza during recent proceedings.

In its nine submissions to the court, South Africa demanded that Israel stop its military actions in Gaza and make it easier for humanitarian aid to reach the area. The relevance of the court’s reaction to these petitions was emphasized by former ICJ legal officer Michael Becker, who emphasized that the court is not required to grant the precise measures asked by South Africa but might choose the most appropriate temporary measures instead.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has no means of enforcement even though its decisions are final and cannot be challenged. As a result, it is unclear whether any provisional measures will be followed, especially in light of Israel’s denial of the accusations of genocide and its claim to the right to defend itself against Hamas.A decision in the case may be rendered by the ICJ in three to four years after a rigorous process of written submissions, oral arguments, and counterarguments. Provisional measures may be approved in the interim if South Africa can show that there is an immediate danger of irreversible harm to the Palestinian population in Gaza as well as the validity of its claims under the genocide treaty.

Israel has rejected the genocide allegations as distorted and defended its actions as targeting Hamas rather than civilians. The ongoing conflict has resulted in a significant loss of life, predominantly among women and children, as reported by Palestinian authorities in Gaza.

Israel has always claimed that UN investigations and international courts are biased, yet it did attend the most recent ICJ proceedings. Though the European Union has remained mostly silent on the subject, Israel’s international position would be called into question by any ICJ order to cease operations. This is especially true given that the United States is its main ally.

  • Mombasa County Calls for Vigilance as Conjunctivitis Outbreak Sparks Concern

    By Samira Mohammed

A public advisory has been released by the Mombasa County Government, advising the public to emphasize strict hygiene standards due to a rise in occurrences of conjunctivitis, also known as ‘Pink Eye Infection’. These precautions include sharing personal items such towels, pillowcases, eye drops, or makeup; not touching or rubbing the eyes and face; and routinely and thoroughly washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

The advisory also emphasizes the infectious nature of Conjunctivitis, highlighting the importance of covering the nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing, proper disposal of tissues, frequent disinfection of surfaces that are regularly touched, and the use of sunglasses to reduce further eye irritation.

Residents who experience symptoms such as redness, itching, blurred vision, or eye discharge are urged to seek immediate medical attention to prevent the spread of the infection.

Following a recent outbreak of conjunctivitis in the neighboring country Tanzania, that forced the country’s health authorities to declare a high alert, the County Government has called for increased hygienic regulations.
