Last season’s runner-up Arsenal kicked off their season with a win against Nottingham Forest. The Gunners took the lead through Eddie Nketiah after Gabriel Martinelli brilliantly beat two defenders to set him up. Bukayo Saka put the Gunners two goals ahead with a beautifully curved left foot shot.

Nottingham forest however made the game a nervy ending pulling one back through a well orcahstrated counter by Anthony Elanga and Taiwo Awoniyi. The Gunners saw the fame out as 2-1 victors.

At St James’ Park, Newcastle run riot against Aston Villa, thrashing them 5-1. Tonali opened the scoring for his team in just the 6th minute, setting the tone for an action-packed game. Villa replied well with Diaby in the 11th minute but that would be their only consolation. Isak quickly responded in the 16th minute with a precise strike, leveling the score.

Isak found the net again in the 58th minute, displaying his clinical finishing. Callum Wilson’s contribution couldn’t be ignored as he netted a goal in the 77th minute, keeping the match intense. Barnes sealed the victory for his side with a last-minute goal in stoppage time.

  • Olmo Leads Leipzig to Historic Cup Victory

RB Leipzig stunned Bayern Munich with a 3-0 victory in the final of the German DFL Cup on Sunday. The star of the show was Dani Olmo, who scored a hat-trick and put on a masterclass of attacking midfield play. The Spaniard showed why he is one of the most sought-after players in Europe, as he tormented the Bayern defense with his movement, vision, and finishing.

Olmo opened the scoring in the 12th minute, when he latched onto a through ball from Benjamin Henrichs and slotted it past Ulerich. In the 34th minute, he doubled his total after receiving a feed from Timo Werner and making an incredible spin to get past Matthijs de Ligt and then poke the ball through the keeper’s legs. When Noussair Mazraoui was penalised for handball in the Bayern penalty area in the 67th minute, he successfully converted the penalty to complete his hat-trick.

On the other side, Bayern Munich’s new signing Harry Kane had a debut to forget, coming on as a substitute in the 63rd minute with his team already trailing by two goals. The England captain, who signed for Bayern from Tottenham for a Bundesliga record €100 million ($110 million), had little impact on the game.

Kane’s appearance was met with rousing applause from Bayern fans, who had been waiting in queue for his jersey since it became available that morning. However, he fell short of expectations and was overshadowed by Olmo’s brilliance. Bayern’s coach Thomas Tuchel apologized to Kane for his team’s poor performance and lack of service to their new star striker.

It was not a good day for us. We were not sharp enough, not aggressive enough, not precise enough. We did not create enough chances for Harry. I am sorry for him because he deserved a better debut.

As Leipzig won the DFL Cup for the first time in history, Kane will have to wait for his first trophy with Bayern. Olmo, meanwhile, solidified his position as one of Europe’s top performers and will look to carry that momentum into the Bundesliga and Champions League.

In a thrilling showdown on Saturday at the King Fahd Stadium, Cristiano Ronaldo, at 38 years of age, single-handedly propelled 10-man Al-Nassr to a momentous triumph in the Arab Club Champions Cup. The legendary footballer’s masterful performance included netting two crucial goals in a riveting 2-1 extra-time conquest over Saudi rivals Al-Hilal. This victory marks Al-Nassr’s inaugural title in the prestigious tournament.

Ronaldo’s journey with Al-Nassr had initially met with a trophy-less spell following his transfer. The team, finishing as runners-up in the Saudi Pro League, saw Ronaldo’s exceptional prowess come to the forefront, as he secured an astounding six goals throughout the tournament. This commendable feat not only bolstered his team’s performance but also granted him the distinction of being the tournament’s top scorer on the path to securing the championship.

The Arab Club Champions Cup, an esteemed competition featuring elite Arab clubs from across the region, encompassed teams from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria.

The star-studded Al-Nassr contingent encountered numerous opportunities to break the deadlock during the first half. Close season acquisitions including Sadio Mane, Seko Fofana, and Marcelo Brozovic were all thwarted by the exceptional goalkeeping skills of Mohammed Alowais.

The intense matchup remained goalless until the second half, when Al-Hilal’s Malcom executed a precise cross, finding fellow Brazilian Michael, who exploited a free header to grant his side the lead. Exemplifying his jubilation, the 27-year-old player commemorated the goal with Ronaldo’s iconic celebration, sprinting to the corner flag and soaring into the air.

This pivotal moment seemed to ignite Ronaldo’s competitive fire. In the 74th minute, the Portuguese captain showcased his exceptional scoring ability, converting a low cross from right-back Sultan Al-Ghannam. This marked his fifth consecutive goal in as many games, showcasing his relentless consistency on the field.

However, the match wasn’t without its challenges for Al-Nassr. Defender Abdulelah Al-Amri received a red card in the second half, reducing the team to 10 players. Additionally, Nawaf Boushal, though on the bench, was ejected from the game due to an altercation with an official. Despite these obstacles, Al-Nassr’s resolute defense persevered, leading the game into extra time.

In the crucial first half of extra time, Ronaldo solidified his pivotal role in the victory. Exploiting a rebound off the crossbar, he capitalized on the goalkeeper’s position and headed the ball into the net, securing his second goal of the match and cementing Al-Nassr’s lead.

However, concern arose as Ronaldo was forced to leave the field due to an apparent injury following a collision during the second period of extra time. This development raises questions about his availability for Al-Nassr’s upcoming Saudi Pro League opener against AlEttifaq, scheduled just two days away.

Ronaldo’s exceptional performance in guiding Al-Nassr to their historic Arab Club Champions Cup triumph will undoubtedly be remembered as a testament to his enduring prowess and indomitable spirit on the football field.

  • Messi Lights up the MLS

    By Eugene Oyier

Lionel Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami has sparked a remarkable transformation in the team’s performance, resulting in a five-game winning streak in the Leagues Cup since his debut in July. In his latest performance, Messi scored his eighth goal in five games, securing a 4-0 victory over Charlotte FC in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals.

Inter Miami’s success can be attributed to Messi’s influence on the team. The Argentine’s dazzling skills and scoring ability have raised the gameplay of his teammates, turning Inter Miami into a more formidable side. The team’s ownership, including co-owner David Beckham, has been actively involved and present at matches, enhancing the atmosphere of Messi-mania.

With Messi’s addition, Inter Miami’s previously struggling season took a turn for the better.

Before his arrival, the team had won only five out of 22 MLS matches. However, since Messi’s debut, they have won all of their Leagues Cup matches and are now just two wins away from claiming the trophy.

Messi’s impact isn’t limited to his goal-scoring prowess as he has also displayed a unique celebration theme, mimicking Marvel superhero gestures, which has garnered attention and added an extra layer of excitement for fans.

Despite the positive momentum, there are concerns about the team’s dependency on Messi and the challenges of managing player fatigue during their winning streak. As they face tougher opponents in the upcoming stages of the competition and the MLS, the team’s ability to maintain their form will be put to the test.

Off the field, Messi’s presence has drawn significant attention, with notable figures such as David Beckham, Derek Jeter, and Lionel Scaloni (Argentina’s World Cup-winning manager) attending matches to witness his performances.

Looking ahead, Inter Miami’s success in the Leagues Cup and the MLS playoffs will likely hinge on their ability to maintain their current momentum while managing the challenges that come with an extended winning streak and increased expectations.

In their final test ahead of their Community Shield showdown against Manchester City, Mikel Arteta’s side triumphed on a home debut for several summer signings.

The visitors proved stern opponents, however, and took the lead in the first half.

After good work from Mohamed Camara, with the midfielder picking up the ball and bursting into the box, a cross was whipped in for Youssouf Fofana to head home.

Arsenal responded well, inspired in part by strong performances from Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber before the interval, and promptly found the equaliser.

Gabriel Martinelli, who played well as part of a reshuffled front three, found Eddie Nketiah with a corner, allowing him to volley in.

Arsenal gained momentum after a slew of second-half substitutions at the hour mark, however Wissam Ben Yedder threatened after hitting the crossbar.

Neither team was able to regain the lead, sending the game into overtime.

Takumi Minamino, a former Liverpool player, was the only one denied in the shootout, with Aaron Ramsdale standing tall down the centre to keep the strike out.

That allowed Gabriel to sneak in the game-winning penalty, capping off Arsenal’s preparations in style only days before the start of the new season.
