  • Adesanya and Volkanovski retain titles at UFC 276

    By Ken Andrew

    kenakikenyi@gmail.com

Israel Adesanya and Alex Volkanovski both retained their UFC titles with brilliant performances at UFC 276. The duo, who both train under Eugene Bareman and the City Kickboxing Gym, retained their Middleweight and Featherweight titles respectively.

Volkanovski put on a striking clinic against fierce rival Max Holloway, cementing his spot as the greatest featherweight in the world. He now has three wins over Holloway, none as magnificent and clear as the third one though. He left the fight almost flawless and seemed just to fast for a fast Holloway.

Volk now sits at the top of the featherweight rankings and having beat Holloway thrice, nothing seems to entice him more in that division. He has intentions to move up a division to lightweight and challenge for the title which is currently vacant. The Australian is on a slick twenty two fight wining streak and is yet to lose in the UFC after twelve fights. His MMA record is currently 25-1.

Israel Adesanya, popularly referred to as the last Stylebender stole the show as always in the UFC 276 main event. His walkout to WWE superstar and legend The Undertaker’s theme song was trending across the world on Sunday morning. He faced Jared Cannonier, who is one of the most powerful middleweights in the world. It was a challenge that Izzy brilliantly passed, making it out of the fight almost unscathed.

Even though he lost at his attempt to become champ-champ against Jan Blachowicz, Izzy still reigns supreme in the middleweight division. After the fight, he called out Alex Pereira, who has amazingly knocked  Izzy out twice during his kick boxing career.

Pereira himself got a win on the same pay per view against Sean Strickland. That fight has got MMA fans drooling and they cannot wait.

  • Haaland, Nunez lead the list of New Talent in Premier League.

    By Blaise Ogutu
The 2022 summer transfer window has been open for the past three weeks and player movements are in full swing. Let’s take a look at the Premier League and what different clubs are up to.
The two top clubs in the form of Manchester City and Liverpool have both made blockbuster signings with Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez respectively. City has been on the lookout for a new striker ever since the departure of veteran Sergio Aguero and seems to have found the perfect replacement in the tall Norwegian. With 86 goals in 89 matches for Borussia Dortmund, Erling Haaland decided a new challenge was on the cards for him and Manchester was the city in mind.
Liverpool on the other hand has added Darwin Nunez to their ranks, in an attempt to win another Premier League title under Jurgen Klopp. The 23-year-old Uruguayan penned a six-year deal from Benfica, the second signing from the league by Liverpool in recent months since Luis Diaz from Porto. Coming into the squad with 34 goals from last season, Klopp will be banking on the young striker to produce the goods in the frontline.
Tottenham Hotspur has been arguably the most active in the window so far with Antonio Conte at the helm looking for an instant impact. The Italian has brought Ivan Perisic from Inter on a free transfer effectively improving his flanks. They have also secured the services of Yves Bissouma from south coast club Brighton and Hove Albion and recently Richarlison from Everton. The latter will be a sore miss for Everton as his goals in the final stretch of last season ensured safety for the Toffees. It is also reported that the club is in advanced talks with Middlesborough to sign Djed Spence.
Spurs’ crosstown rivals Arsenal have also made moves this summer with the impending arrival of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City to bolster their attack following the departure of Alexander Lacazette to Lyon. Courtesy of the Gunners, there will be another Vieira in the league in the form of Fabio Vieira who they signed from Porto. For a long time, the club had been linked with Leeds forward Raphinha but that has since evaporated as Chelsea came swooping in for the Brazilian and are now involved in a battle with Barcelona for his signature.
Plenty of movements all around with pending deals (Manchester United still eyeing Frenkie De Jong from Barcelona) with plenty of time to go before deadline day in September.

  • THE NEW WAVE IN TOWN

    By Sophie Murithi
    (sophiekinya3@gmail.com)

South Korea has become quite an exciting sensation in the recent years for many people around the world. South Korea, officially known as the Republic of Korea is located in the East Asia. It is the most economically developed country in the continent with its beautiful Islands, rolling hills and mountains.

The Korean culture is very interesting. All aspects including the food culture, mode of dressing, their music, K-Drama and even K-Beauty. Hence attracting many people to learn and want to know more about this culture. The Korean food culture is famous for its nutritional value. Did you know Korea is the country with the least obese people in the world? These people are very keen on what they eat and hence serve some of the healthiest food in the world. Another interesting fact about the traditional Korean food culture is that they love using different colors when cooking. These colors mostly include red, yellow, green, white and black. They believe that by using these five colors when cooking, they are absorbing the energy of the universe through each meal. Each of the five colors is related to diverse elements that compose the universe, as well as to cardinal directions and philosophical meanings.

I bet most of the people who are obsessed with the Korean culture started with K-Pop. Mostly BTS (a popular Korean boy band based in Seoul). A study was conducted by the involvement team on how many students on campus listen to K-Pop and the results were as expected. Out of 10 students, 4 people absolutely love and listen to K-Pop, 3 people occasionally listen to their music and the rest do not know anything about the Korean music or culture. ‘I listen to K-Pop because of the message they preach which is mostly love, unity and kindness’ Ruth, a student of IR told me. ‘K-Pop is also a nice way to unwind. EXO is my go-to music whenever I feel low and want to feel re-energized’ she continued to say.

It goes without saying that if you listen to K-Pop you’ll want to watch K-Drama which are shows created by Koreans. If you watch one show, I guarantee you that you will want to watch another and another because the shows are that good. They bring out a set of emotions when watching that even you will be shocked. There are different genres to choose from so you can watch whatever genre you love.

In Kenya, the Korean culture has exponentially grown. There are Korean restaurants everywhere and many people are adopting their methods of traditional cooking. Not forgetting the aspect of beauty. Most of the facemasks and other facial products are being used in the Kenyan market. They can be bought anywhere, online shops like Jumia or physical shops like the Glow secret.

Korean language is also being taught in schools. UON prides itself in becoming the first university in East Africa to offer the Korean language as a course hence raising awareness of the language in Kenya. Korean studies are also being taught in Mahanaim Educational Institute, Nairobi.

Here in Kenya, we have meet and greets for people with similar interests in the Korean culture. The K-Pop and K-Drama enthusiasts meet to socialize, dance, play games, eat and generally have a good time.

Times have been tough, and things have gone wrong,
But the deep love we share has been there all along,
You say why go on, there’s nothing that’s right,
But we never give up, we continue to fight.

There’s a light of love that gives us our sight,
Our hearts may get dark at times, but we know there is light,
We both have situations not fair,
But inside we get through them because of something special we share.

The trials make you aware of the way we feel,
A love that is not fake but so very real,
I know at times that it seems like a raw deal,
But we must get through these trails until we are healed.

Trials are not easy, and you feel there’s no hope,
There are times when you feel you’re at the end of your rope,
But you must go down deep in the pit of your heart,
Let it stop your despair and give a new start.

For true love for each other is a gift some never get,
So when that trial comes, don’t ever forget,
That there is a rare thing we share that had to come from above,
And those trials will end, what got you through was pure love.

  • AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE MONEY

    By Stephanie Kampire

    stephanierwicha200394@daystar.ac.ke

Fenty Beauty was launched in Kenya on Thursday 26th May 2022 at the Social House Lavington, Nairobi.

This famous brand is partly owned by a renowned musician, Rihanna Robyn. She has focused on a range of traditionally hard to match skin tones, developing formulas that work for all skin types, and pinpointing universal shades. Her aim, above all, is to inspire: “Makeup is there for you to have fun with. It should never feel like pressure. It should never feel like a uniform. Feel free to take chances, and take risks, and dare to do something new or different.”

This dazzling and beautiful launch was graced with appearances from Kenya’s creative industry, which generated quite a buzz on social media as fellow Kenyans talked about how they were dressed.

Today, Fenty Beauty is one of the most popular and successful brands in the world. Forbes has estimated that the bulk of the musician’s fortune which is around $1.4 billion, specifically comes from the value of Fenty Beauty which she has 50% ownership of. The company itself is worth $2.8 billion making her the wealthiest female musician in the world.

Rihanna has clearly shown the world that limitations to the music industry are present and that it is possible to make money through makeup. She has become a vivid inspiration to upcoming brands in the world and especially here in Africa. It is safe to say that many makeup brands have come up and have made as much money as Fenty Beauty, but in my opinion, none of them have addressed a need such as this; having traditional makeup for hard to match skin tones. This make up line has made its consumers feel bold and beautiful regardless of the imperfections on their skin.

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics valued these products at Ksh. 100 Billion. I also acknowledge the growth of the industry in the current local market of Kenya. We have our very own Suzie Beauty, Joanna K cosmetics, and also Huddah Cosmetics. What is evident in all these brands is that the influence they have on the public as youtubers and content creators has helped them establish businesses that are clearly generating quite an amount of profit. This is the same for the Chief Executive Officer of Fenty Beauty, Rihanna. She has used her musical career and her effect on people to establish a business that has put her on the map as one of among the wealthiest artists in the world.

Opportunities to make money are found in the influence that we have on the people in our spheres. The Bible says that your gift will make room for you, I beg to add that your influence executed in a wise way can create wealth for you and opportunities for the unemployed.

In whatever field we may find ourselves in, think about how to make money from it other than wallowing in the sense that we are living in a poor economy that has absolutely no way to be successful.

The Daystar Falcons Rugby Team is going to the Driftwood Sevens tournament this weekend which will be held in Mombasa Sports Club.

The Falcons are optimistic as we reflect on their good performance during the first two rounds of the National Sevens Circuit in Kabeberi and Christie Sevens. With the hard runs on the wing by Patrick Odongo, mighty hand-offs by Floyd Wabwire, raging-bull-agression by by Trevor Opondo, dancing sidesteps by Clinton Kioko, hard and heavy runs by Augustine Owino, good kicks by Captain John Oliele, smart moves by Emmanuel Opondo and skilful dives into the try line by David Williams, indeed they are worthy opponents to their rival teams.

They are placed in Group B with the Kenya Cup side , KCB and Kabras RFC, together with their fellow Championship side South Coast Pirates. It is not an easy task with all these teams portraying a good performance in the recent two circuits but the Daystar Rugby Falcons have all that it takes to outshine them for as with prayer, smart work and the bond between the players, everything is positively possible.

  • WHAT IF I MARRY HER

    By Abdul Shaban

What if nature is not fair to you

What if I marry your girlfriend,

What if I treat her better than you did,

What if I live my promises with her,

Will you still be mad at me?

What if she finds the love of her life in me,

What if I sent sweet romantic poems to her,

What if I go with her to the movies,

What if I build a home with her,

What if I get kids with her,

    Will you still forgive me?

What if she lies to you only to be with me,

What if she fails to come meet you,

Only to come and hang out with me,

What if she lies to you she doesn’t sing,

But sings to me the whole night,

Will you be stupid to believe her?

What if I am the hero in her dreams,

What if her heart melts only when she sees me,

What if she introduces me to you as her cousin,

And deep inside I’m her beloved lover,

What if she pecks me in front of you,

Will you be kind enough to give us a space?

    When that time comes,

When I finally marry your girlfriend,

Don’t be mad instead be happy,

    For she will be secure,

    Safe in my arms .
