  • ORISON REQUEST

    By Abdul Shaban

What if the hand would fall for the leg,

    Get married and bear children,

Regardless of the looks, the number of toes or fingers,

    How would life have been?

Rivers ain’t flowing from the same source anymore,

    No romance without finance,

Good looks go with a sense of humour,

If you ain’t armed you ain’t qualified!

You are the song my heart sings,

A beauty I’d love to wife,

A house to forever build on,

The lyrics are so new to forget…

    Afraid of this vacuum I’m,

Pieces to fill it are scattered,

Life is slowly getting out of hand,

A blade of grass tightly onto I hold,

Fearing stealthily it might slide out.

    It’s a prayer humbly I make,

Fight the battle for our sake,

A proposal am ready to make,

    Physicians, save my rib!

Ears lament at the screams of corrupt voices

That emerge from closed doors of political offices

Culture is devoured like those nailed on crosses

The system mourns like sufferers of many loses

Skirts descend to the ground like defeated forces

Women are ploughed like gardens by their bosses

Their bodies are jumped on and ridden like horses

Nepotism has suffered from unknown sources

Honesty and integrity are nothing but corpses

Sex and money are what leadership endorses

Female workers are now victims of divorces

Dignity has surly left the bureaucratic process…

  • Daystar University Holds a Career Fair and Recruitment Drive.

    By Sophie Murithi

    (sophiechloe044@gmail.com)

The event was held in Valley Road campus on 10 June 2022 at DAC auditorium to interview and recruit more than 50 students/graduates for internships and jobs.

The event kicked off as from 9:00am to 4:00pm

Many students turned up in large numbers both from Athi and Valley Road campuses. Keynote speakers included Chinthana Thanthirige from Mas intimates, Rose Wanjohi from Royal Media Services, Cynthia Nabwire and Amaris Bii from Talent Soko, Phancy Maina from Brighter Monday and Christine Mweteeli from Soft Skills limited. They emphasized on students not just sitting in class and studying alone, but also learning other skills aside from what they are taught in class as well as participating in extra-curricular activities.

Nita Kihiro the acting placement and international relations officer was responsible for the event. During an interview with her, she had the following to say. “I am very happy with the turnout in today’s career fair. The other days we usually don’t have many students coming in for these kinds of events but today’s event has been a success. I hope that students continue coming in for the ones in the near future.”

Joel Mumo a communication student served in the placement committee in charge of public relations and branding. He was as well the master of ceremony and during an interview with him, he had the following to say, “the main focus for today’s event was to provide opportunities for students and to bridge the gap between the industry and the school for them not to struggle when it comes to getting internships or even jobs.”

Alice, an alumnus of DU, who also works with Brighter Monday spent the day beside her colleagues helping students correct their CVs and answering their questions. She advised students to obey rules and regulations since they help and prepare us for the future although we may not see it right now. She as well added and said the culture activated in school usually helps us in the organizations we join in future and most recommend students from Daystar.

“I have learnt a lot from this event and actually didn’t know there are professionals who review CVs,” a continuing student from Valley road campus said. “I learnt about this event from the school email and I urge other students to avail themselves when these opportunities arise,” she added.

The next event for this year will be held in early November and will be a Career fare mainly for the graduating class but everybody will be invited having their Curriculum Vitae’s along for them to be reviewed so that they can get jobs.

  • SAFARI YA UMAUTI

    Na Abdul Shaban

    Maradhi yamenisibu, hadi leo naugua,

    Sasa naona aibu, afya imenipotea,

    Naumwa nakondeana, dawa haziwezi tibu,

    Nikitizama kushoto, kisha narudi kulia,

Baba lamtoka jasho, mama naye analia,

    Mauti yanifikia, hilo halina vikwazo,

    Naona amenijia, asohitaji mawazo,

    Sakaratil mauti, nilikuwa nasikia,

Kiu ndo hakikauki, hata maji ya dunia,

    Makosa hayajifuti, madogo nilodhania,

    Taarifa zatolewa, wengi wanahuzunika,

    *”Kweli tumeondokewa,na mpendwa bila shaka”*

    Kitandani natolewa, uchafu unanitoka,

    Wanatafutwa wajuzi, tayari kuandaliwa,

Wanikosha kwa simanzi, na marashi kufushiwa,

Tayari mekwisha kazi, nje sasa natolewa,

    Swafu witri zimefika, ninaanza kuswaliwa,

    Mbiombio napelekwa, kaburini kufukiwa,

    Tayari nimeshazikwa, huku watu wahusiwa,

Tubuni tubuni jama, kaburi lina vituko,

Hapa mbavu zimebanwa, natamani rudi huko,

    Nashauri walimwengu, tupunguzeni machafu,

    Wanadamu jihadhari, tusije kuangamia,

    Tusifanye ya khatari, mola atuangalia,

    Tuiandae safari, mema tukisubiria,

  • ENYI VIJANA

    (Picha kwa hisani ya Owlcation.com)

    Na Abdul Shaban

Tulisifu na kulitukuza jina lake siku zote

    Kwa maana anatupenda sisi sote

    Uwepo wake umedhihirika kote duniani

Siku zote nuru za nguvu zake huonekana hata gizani

Wakati wa furaha na majonzi na dhiki

Yeye ndiye dereva wa maisha yetu

Enyi vijana, njooni nyote kwake Jalali

    Tuwe tayari tuitwapo kusikiza

    Enyi vijana, yakini tukumbuke tulikotoka

Tubadilishe yetu mienendo ili tupate kuokoka

Tusiwe na mioyo mizito ilijaa takataka

Bali tuombe msamaha kwake Mola mkono wake wa kulia tutakaa

Tuweze kusimama imara katika imani yetu

Tukijua ya kwamba mola hujibu maombi yetu

Na yule amwaminiye hawezi kumwacha ateseke kamwe.

  • KITU KIZITO

    (Picha kwa hisani ya Dreamstime.com)

    {Na Abdul Shaban}

    Nakumbuka siku hiyo, niliketi kitandani,

    Alikuja mbiyombiyo, akalala kifuani,

Akiwa mwenye kiliyo, kama yuko msibani,

    Hakika kitu kizito, kimenipiga kichwani.

Kabla kumuuliza, tatizo ni kitu gani,

    Ambacho kinamliza, akatoka furahani,

Akanambia sikiza, “ewe wangu wa hubani”

    Hakika kitu kizito, kimenipiga kichwani.

    Na mimi sikupuuza, kulifanyia utani,

Sauti nikapunguza, ya redio pale ndani,

    Akaanza kunijuza, ili kunitoa dhani,

    Hakika kitu kizito, kimenipiga kichwani.

Kwa sauti ya kuimba, kama chiriku mbugani,

    Ndipo akaanza amba, kimtiacho shidani,

Kuwa eti! Ana mimba, ni yangu si ya fulani,

    Hakika kitu kizito, kimenipiga kichwani.

    Sikusubiri apoe, ama afike mwishoni,

    Ikabidi niyatoe, niliyonayo moyoni,

    Nikaanza na mayoe, yalonijaa pomoni,

    Hakika kitu kizito, kimenipiga kichwani.

“Nyonda wangu taratibu, sikiza yangu maoni,

Japo jambo la aibu, mimba isiyo ndoani,

    Kulea ninawajibu, usiwe mwenye sononi”

    Hakika kitu kizito, kimenipiga kichwani.

Kwangu ikawa aula, sote tukiwa rahani,

    Nikazidi saka hela, viwe havikosekani,

    Vizurizuri vyakula, matunda pale nyumbani,

    Hakika kitu kizito, kimenipiga kichwani.

Ikakatika miezi, kwa rehema za Manani,

    Nikiyatoa malezi, mzuri yenye thamani,

    Akabariki Menyezi, kujifungua mwendani,

    Hakika kitu kizito, kimenipiga kichwani.

Huku nikiwa na hamu, nikawasili gangoni,

    Mtoto nimfahamu, aliyetoka tumboni,

    Sikuamini dawamu, nilichoona machooni,

    Hakika kitu kizito, kimenipiga kichwani.

    Ayi! Nilipata tabu, sijawahi maishaini,

    Nikaiona ajabu, mbaya isiyo mfani,

Ati! Napewa mwarabu, na mie hatufanani,

    Hakika kitu kizito, kimenipiga kichwani.

    Tama naachia nibu, kuongeza sitamani,

Nyonda hana la kujibu, anaomba samahani,

    Kwa haya yalonisibu, siwezi kutamakani,

    Hakika kitu kizito, kimenipiga kichwani.

  • THE BLUE FLAG OF EXCELLENCE

    By Nkatha Wainaina.

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) on Tuesday night held its 5th edition of the KUZA Broadcasting Awards. KUZA Awards is an initiative of the CAK to recognize and fete broadcasters across Kenya, who demonstrate excellence in their broadcasts in line with the regulatory requirements. The annual event seeks to reward responsible and responsive broadcasting as well as broadcasters who have demonstrated patriotism.

This year’s theme was Celebrating Excellence in Broadcasting. Daystar University’s own Shine FM radio proudly represented the school by winning the Compliance Award in the community radio category. All community radios in the country qualified to be in the pool but Shine FM emerged the top based on the monitoring of the broadcaster’s compliance with the regulatory requirements during the 2021/2022 Financial Year. In case you missed the magnitude of the competition Shine FM faced, there are twenty-four community radios in the country.

After a one on one with the elated station’s manager, Chris Avram Waweru, he said that this national recognition has set a cornerstone of brilliance for Shine FM. He continued to say that this doesn’t provoke possible adjustments in running the station but it guides and sets the pace at which the station should always be run.

“I would like to say thank you to the CAK team for the award. I would also like to recognize the Shine FM team for their hard work & dedication. This wouldn’t have been possible without them. We are elated and motivated, to say the least. More is coming from Shine FM especially as we rebrand”, Chris Avram said.

The Awards that started in 2018, enable consumer participation and encourage the use of the broadcasting platform for socio-economic development. It has three categories; the Regulatory Compliance Awards, Collaborative Awards and People’s Choice Awards where the audience gets to vote for their favourite radio and television stations.

Amongst other winners were, Citizen TV for the favourite free-to-air TV in Kenya and Radio Maisha, for the favourite radio station in Kenya.
