  • Berlin residents back seizing of property from Mega landlords.

The residents of Berlin supported a referendum to socialize properties owned by the rich landlords to control skyrocketing housing and rental prices in Germany.

The berlin renters who make up roughly 85% of the population sought a democratic approach via a referendum after the 2020 rent cap was unsuccessful in the federal constitutional court. In April this year, Berlin’s constitutional court ruling found it unconstitutional to impose a rent cap that would overshadow the already existing federal laws in Berlin. A rent cap is a set limit of rent to be paid by renters

“For many of us, it feels like the end of a four-year marathon. Or at the very least, we’ve reached a major high point.” Kalle Kunkel, an activist told Euro News. The locals supported expropriation by 56% to 39%.

If the bill passes, private landlords who own more than 3000 units risk having some of their apartments folded into the city’s affordable housing stock. More than 240,000 apartments may be seized by the state.

Berlin’s parliament will have to debate the initiative not necessarily enact it. Its success would mean mass expropriation may face the same Berlin’s constitutional court that deemed the rent cap unconstitutional.

The campaign that is meant to curb gentrification is named after Deutsche Wohnen, a private landlord that held more than 110,000 apartments in Berlin.

Deutsche Wohnen campaign argues that article 15 of the constitution allows socialization of the public good – housing. Socialization of the project is costly and estimated to be about 30 billion euros by Berlin’s parliament.

Berlin was once known as Europe’s most affordable capital city until it experienced a housing crisis and rents began to double in the last decade. The referendum for many supporters is about ensuring Berlin is accessible to all, not just the rich.

Activists still have a long road ahead to make the referendum a reality.

  • R. Kelly Faces Life Imprisonment in a Sex Trafficking Scandal.

RNB star Robert Sylvester Kelly has been found guilty of sexual exploitation and sexual violation by a federal jury in Brooklyn, New York. The 54-year-old faces a minimum of 10 years in prison after three decades long of numerous allegations of misconduct with young women and children.

In the federal court, the jury found him guilty of all nine counts; one count of Racketeering and eight counts of violating the Mann Act. Racketeering is organized crime in which a group will extort, coerce or otherwise develop some type of scheme that will allow them to collect money repeatedly over a period of time.

The Mann Act is a 1910 law that made it illegal to transport any woman or girl across state lines for immoral purposes in the USA.

Of the 14 underlying offences of Racketeering, prosecutors had proven all but two of them thus he was convicted of the charge. He needed to be found guilty of at least two to be convicted of that count.

The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations(RICO) statue was passed in 1970 in an effort to fight organized crime, carries a significant charge of 20 years. Prosecutors used the RICO case which can go back 10 years in proving some of the charges against him.

A jury of seven men and five women found him guilty of violating the Mann Act, a sex trafficking law, by transporting girls to his location using his entourage of bodyguards, employees and managers. According to witnesses who consisted of former associates and multiple accusers, this was done routinely.

Attorney Gloria Allred admitted to the press that Kelly was the worst predator she had ever come across. She represented three of the six victims testified at the trial

“Of all the predators I have pursued, Mr Kelly is the worst for many reasons: targeting them, recruiting them, isolating them from their friends and family, forcing them to follow his abusive rules in order to control them, punishing them if they didn’t follow his rules to the letter, hitting them and threatening them, giving many of them genital herpes.”

The legal expert Michael Bachner said in an interview with NBC that the Jury deliberations were very short due to the defendants’ inability to prove every victim a liar. The jury’s verdict took only nine hours over two days.

“It’s not just one person coming forward, it’s a multitude of victims coming forward. And it causes the defense to have to try and argue that everybody’s a liar. And juries just routinely do not accept that defense,” Bachner said.

One of the final witnesses in the testimony, focused on Aaliyah, a famous singer who died in 2001 after a plane crash at age 22. R Kelly had produced her 1994 debut album, “Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number.” The witnesses claimed that she was abused around 1993, when she was just 13 or 14 years old.

There were also testimonies about fraudulent marriage schemes hatched to protect Kelly after he feared he had impregnated Aaliyah.

R Kelly is awaiting his sentence on May 4 and faces up to 20 years in prison. He also has pleaded not guilty to sex-related charges in Illinois and Minnesota.

Trial dates in those cases have yet to be set. He had been acquitted before in Chicago following a child pornography case in 2008.

  • CDC eases mask-wearing guidelines for fully vaccinated

The director of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday said that fully vaccinated Americans can now participate in most outdoor activities, without wearing a mask or social distancing.

The CDC head, Rochelle Walensky, revealed the agency’s new mask guidance during a White House briefing on coronavirus.

“Anyone who is fully vaccinated can participate in indoor and outdoor activities, large or small, without wearing a mask or physical distancing. If you are fully vaccinated, you can start doing the things that you had stopped doing because of the pandemic.”

However, fully vaccinated people are still required to wear their masks while using public transport including buses, trains ad airplanes. Walensky said that the CDC is continuing to review its travel policies, but did not explain reasoning behind Thursday’s announcement.

“Right now for travel we are asking people to continue to wear their masks,” she said.

Moreover, the CDC noted that vaccinated people should continue following the existing state, local or tribal laws and regulations on masks and social distancing, as well as policies at businesses and workplaces.

Consequently, as of Friday morning, the rules looked very different from one state, city or county to the next.

US President Joe Biden heralded the CDC’s announcement in an outdoor press conference hours later saying, “The CDC is saying, they have concluded that fully vaccinated people are at a very, very, low risk of getting Covid-19. Therefore, if you are fully vaccinated, you no longer need to wear a mask,” said Biden. “Let me repeat: if you are fully vaccinated, you no longer need to wear a mask.”

Walensky also said: “We have all longed for this moment when we can get back to some sense of normalcy. Based on the continuing downward trajectory of cases, the scientific data on the performance of our vaccines and our understanding of how the virus spreads, that moment has come for those who are fully vaccinated.”

To some, the announcement is a significant step in resuming pre-covid life, but others remain skeptical about the decision to ease the restrictions.

Jeniffer Nuzzo, an epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health said she expects mask-wearing to continue in transportation settings, as well as some other places open to the public, such as grocery stores.

“I really don’t expect public settings to change that much until case numbers come down,” said Nuzzo.

  • Somalia’s Threat to Withdraw from IGAD

    By: Evelyne Syombua (issyombua@gmail.com)

On Wednesday the 27th of January, Somalia threatened to withdraw from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development after the group sided with Kenya in a diplomatic row between the two countries. On Monday the 25th of January, Somalia ordered all its diplomats in Kenya to leave within seven days while also giving Kenyan diplomats to quit within the same period. This comes after the diplomatic relations between Kenyan and Somalia being severed for the recent weeks with Somalia blaming Kenya for meddling in its internal political affairs.

Last month IGAD created a fact-finding mission seeking an intervention which was aimed at settling the tension between the two countries. Somalia wrote to the members of IGAD on the 15th of December 2020, demanding an independent mission to verify its claims that Kenta was training forces to fight the Somalia National Army forces stationed in Gedo their common border. This came after it cut its ties with Kenya.

The team which was led by Yacin Elmi Bouh, the Djiboutian Ambassador to Kenya and his colleague to Somalia Aden Hassan Aden and also included an IGAD observer said they had found no evidence supporting violations by Kenya.

The Somalia Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Mohamed Abdirazak on Wednesday said the country will reject the report since those who took part in it were “biased, partisan, unfair, compromised and predetermined to exonerate Kenya”.

The Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the findings of the team were proof that Somalia’s claims were a political ploy meant to distract the region from security issues. “The report of the fact-finding mission affirms the fact that the allegations by Somalia against Kenya are wholly unfounded”, the ministry said in a statement. The ministry further said, “The impartial report definitively settles the matter, Kenya will not be drawn into the reckless campaign whose sole intent remains the creation of artificial fissures for parochial and domestic ends at the expense of regional peace and security and regional integration”.

The report criticised Somalia for severing ties with Kenya, arguing the historical problems faced by the two countries could only be solved through deeper diplomatic engagements. “Somalia strongly holds to all its initial accusations against Kenya and will pursue all means to protect her sovereignty”, Abdirazak said in a statement, threatening that his country will withdraw from Igad.

  • Biden, Harris certified as winners of 2020 US elections amidst pro-Trump Protests

The US Congress certified that President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect, Kamala Harris, are the victors of the 2020 US elections. US congress confirmed the results today despite the delays caused by pro-Trump supporters who stormed and occupied Capitol building in Washington DC on Wednesday, 6th January 2020 to disrupt the final election count.

The Capitol riot was President Donald Trump’s last efforts to halt the certification of the election results after spewing false claims of election fraud in a weeklong campaign. Despite inciting the riots, President Trump released a statement earlier today agreeing to respect the election results. The statement came shortly after Congress certified the results earlier today.

“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th,” stated Trump.

US leaders and world leaders alike have condemned the Capitol riots that were instigated by Trump’s baseless claims. President-elect Joe Biden denounced the riot and called protesters “extremists” and stated that the violence the protesters have caused is “an assault on the citadel of liberty the Capitol itself. An assault on the people’s representatives and the Capitol Hill police sworn to protect them … An assault on the rule of law … An assault on the most sacred of American undertakings: The doing of the people’s business.”

Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, told Russian News agencies that the US electoral system does not meet “modern democratic standards”.

“This is largely the reason for the split in society now observed in the United States”, added Zakharova.

Washington DC Mayor, Muriel Bowser, extended a state of emergency for 15 days after the Capitol protests left at least 4 people dead and 14 police officers injured. Mayor Bowser decided “to extend the state of emergency to ensure peace and security through the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris”.

  • The UK Approves AstraZeneca Vaccine

    By: Sumaya Hussein (husseinsumaya1@gmail.com)

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has been approved by the UK medicines regulator, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA). This makes it the second vaccine to be approved in the UK after Pfizer.

The approval by the body of the came after weeks of examining trial data by experts and it was concluded that the vaccine met its strict standards of safety, quality and effectiveness.
The vaccination programme will start on Monday and will aim to reach millions of people in at-risk categories as quickly as possible.

The new variant of the virus causing high rates of infection has made vaccination much more urgent. The government’s joint committee on vaccination and immunization (JCVI) has advised that priority should be to give as many at-risk groups their first dose of either the Oxford or Pfizer vaccine, other than providing two doses in four weeks.

“Everyone will still receive their second dose and this will be within 12 weeks of their first. The second dose completes the course and is important for long term protection,” said a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).

AstraZeneca said its vaccine would be made available to some of the poorest regions of the world at low cost and not being manufactured for profit. CEO of the company, Pascal Soriot, said AstraZeneca could provide the UK with up to 2 million doses a week and would start shipping the first doses “today or tomorrow”.

“The good news with this is we are going to be able to inject a lot of people with one dose very quickly, provide them with a reasonably good dose of protection until they get their second dose two to three months later. That will enable us to protect more people because we can wait two to three months for the second dose,” added Soriot.

The UK has ordered 100m doses of the vaccine and eventually, all adults will be offered, according to Matt Hancock, the UK health secretary.
“Because we’ve got enough of this vaccine on order to vaccine the whole population – we’ve got 100m doses on order- add that to the 30m doses of Pfizer and that’s enough for two doses for the entire population,” he said in an interview on BBC Breakfast.
“So I can now say with confidence that we can vaccinate everyone except of course for children because this vaccine has not been trialled on children and anyway children are much less likely to have symptoms from the disease,” he added.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, celebrated the news as “truly fantastic news and a triumph for British science”.
“We will now move to vaccinate as many people as quickly as possible.” he tweeted.

  • FDA Authorizes Moderna Vaccine for Emergency Use in the US

The Food and drug Administration (FDA) authorized the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna, which joins the Pfizer-BioNTech as the second vaccine available for use in the US.

The announcement on Friday came a day after a committee of outside experts endorsed the use of the Moderna vaccine across the US, saying the benefits outweigh the risks.

“With the availability of two vaccines now for the prevention of COVID-19, the FDA has taken another crucial step in the fight against this global pandemic that is causing vast numbers of hospitalizations and deaths in the United States each day,” said FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn, in a press release.

The vaccine which was 94% effective against symptomatic COVID-19 in clinical trials can now be given to adults 18 years and older. Data presented by Moderna also hints that the vaccine could prevent asymptomatic infection as well.

Both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine will be available under Emergency Use Authorization, a designation that lets the FDA sign off on products faster than the normal review process during an emergency like a pandemic.

The Moderna vaccine can be easily stored compared to the Pfizer vaccine, which requires to be kept at ultra-cold temperatures.

Moderna can be stored in a refrigerator for up to 30 days, making it easier to distribute to places without the infrastructure to maintain extremely low temperatures.

“We remain focused on scaling up manufacturing to help us protect as many people as we can from this terrible disease,” Stéphane Bancel, CEO of Moderna said in a press release.

The United States ordered 200 million doses of the Moderna vaccine, enough to vaccinate 100 million people.

The first doses will be given to health care workers and residents in long-term care facilities within days.

Moderna has about 5.9 million doses ready for shipment set to begin during the weekend, according to operation Warp Speed, the US government’s vaccine development program. The first Moderna vaccines are expected to be administered on Monday.

Moderna has said it plans to deliver approximately 20 million doses to the US government this year, and will provide the 200 million doses by end of June 2021.

  • THE U.S. SET TO EXIT FROM THE PARIS AGREEMENT

    By: Brenda Mongare (brendamongare171595@daystar.ac.ke)

    Thumbnail photo courtesy of: weforum.org

The Trump administration made a statement to the international community that it plans to officially withdraw from the Paris climate accord. The Paris climate accord unites 188 nations to combat climate change.

President Trump called the agreement “a total disaster” and argued that the Obama administration’s pledges would have “hurt the competitiveness” of the United States.

The withdrawal is still subject to the outcome of next year’s US presidential election – if Mr Trump loses, the winner may decide to change this decision.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the administration had sent official notification of its plans to the United Nations.

“In international climate discussions, we will continue to offer a realistic and pragmatic model — backed by a record of real world results — showing innovation and open markets lead to greater prosperity, fewer emissions, and more secure sources of energy,” Pompeo said. “We will continue to work with our global partners to enhance resilience to the impacts of climate change and prepare for and respond to natural disasters.”

But how much can they do to fight climate change in the absence of federal leadership?

The US would become the only country to leave the pact, a decision Trump promised to boost US oil, gas and coal industries.

The Paris Agreement was set to provide a foundation for sustainable, low-carbon and resilient development under a changing climate by strengthening community-level resilience in countries suffering the same fate as Kenya.

Some of the plans that were set forward for countries to follow were:

    1. Planting trees that absorb CO2 from the air is one such strategy.
    2. Reduction of the amount of greenhouse gases put into the atmosphere can also be achieved through the use of energy sources that don’t release greenhouse gases such as fuel efficiency in vehicles, hydrogen fuel cells, solar power, tidal energy, geothermal and wind power, use of carbon sinks, carbon credits, and taxation measures.

The Trump administration might end up losing a lot of traction with respect to US influence globally and it could take time for the international community to trust the US as a consistent partner in any developments or ties.

The US and China have been leading negotiations of the Paris “rule book” that outlines transparency and reporting rules for signatories, let’s wait and see what happens next.

  • ALWAYS REMOVES ITS FEMALE SYMBOL FROM PACKAGING

    By: Brenda Mongare (brendamongare171595@daystar.ac.ke)

    Thumbnail photo courtesy of: www.amazon.com

Menstrual pad maker Always has announced that it will remove the female symbol from its products to reflect the fact that some people who menstruate don’t identify as women, including transgender men and nonbinary people.

The company was forced into deciding at the behest of lobbyists, Always’ parent company, Procter and Gamble, released a statement saying it opted to make the change after continued feedback from customers, including trans men and allies.

“For over 35 years Always has championed girls and women, and we will continue to do so, we’re also committed to diversity and inclusion and are on a continual journey to understand the needs of all of our consumers.”

“It’s just a way to have accurate, affirming medical care, to exist in your body and be comfortable and recognized for who you are, periods are a biological, reproductive function that has nothing to do with how you think of yourself, which is what gender is. People have to get away from this idea that gender is connected to genitals.” Erika Hart added

But it’s possible to have a uterus without identifying as a woman, as is the case with transgender men, as well as nonbinary and intersex people since gender identity and sex are two different things.

Gender identity refers to a person’s internal concept of self and can include terms like man, woman, transgender, and nonbinary.

For example, a transgender man is someone who was assigned female at birth but identifies as male. A nonbinary person is someone who identifies as neither male nor female, regardless of how they were assigned at birth.

Some transgender people may choose to have hormone treatments or surgery to make their physical characteristics better align with their identity, but many do not.

The discomfort of menstruation can be magnified for trans men who choose to take testosterone since the hormone can cause vaginal inflammation and can make using tampons or menstrual cups painful.

The monthly experience can also be emotionally painful for trans and nonbinary people due to gender dysphoria, or the psychological distress caused by a disconnect between a person’s identity and their assigned sex.

While gender dysphoria can be brought on by social situations, such as when someone is misgendered (referred to in a way other than how they identify), it can also happen to trans men and nonbinary people when buying and using menstrual products. That’s because periods are typically referred to as only a “women’s issue” and most conversations about menstruation focus on women and girls.

President Trump is facing impeachment inquiry after the whistle blower report was released by the Washington post. The report is one showing the phone call conversation between President Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky talking about Joe Biden, America’s former Vice president and his son. Democrats are accusing the president of abusing his office for his personal political gain and terming it national security.

“Donald Trump has violated the oath of office, betrayed his nation and committed impeachable acts. To preserve the constitution, our democracy and basic integrity he should be impeached,” said Joe Biden in a press conference.

Rudy Guiliani, President Donald Trump attorney confirmed the allegations made by the democrats during a live CNN show called Cuomo Prime time. This has led to opening an investigation of president Trump and the attorney. In President Trump’s defense, he wanted the Ukrainian government to open an investigation against Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden as there are allegations between their involvement in rigging of the 2016 U.S presidential election.

“They know they can’t win the 2022 election so they are pursuing the insane impeachment witch hunt. I’ve been going through it now for more times than I’ve been in office,” President Trump said.

Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the United States House of representatives who announced the formal impeachment inquiry is now being threatened to be sued by President Trump.
