  • Daystar City Thrash Saint Paul’s University

Daystar City grabbed their first win of the season under the stewardship of new head coach Julius Otieno.

City triumphed 2-0 over Saint Paul’s University at their home ground, much to the dismay of the home support.

City head coach made some changes to the starting XI from the previous encounter with Kenya College of Accounting (K.C.A).

The Julius Otieno-led outfit started strong and was persistent in attack as the first goal came after Kelly “Doku’s” cleared delivery bobbled its way to Juventus Nguge, who finished with precision.

City proceeded to dominate the game, picking out passes and winning fouls in their opponent’s half of the field.

Saint Paul’s tried to mount a comeback but the defense was true to the test with a formidable backline that was good on the ball and good in transitions.

Eventually, the second goal came from Abubakar Hamis’ setpiece that was converted by City striker William Majak after coming off the bar.

With a two-goal advantage City pinned S.P.U back as they were hardly able to create any chances.

Charles Lubuthe, Aaron Deng, and Nathan Hanif were brought in to see out the last minutes of the game as City grabbed their first win of the season.

  • Daystar Falcons Narrowly edge Daystar City in Derby

The two campuses of Daystar University faced off on October 1st, at Thika Grounds in a highly anticipated derby encounter.

Daystar Falcons; Athi River’s team, got the best of Daystar City; Nairobi’s team after a great contest but questionable refereeing.

Kimongi was the player on fire. He let loose a rocket from a rebounded shot late into the first half. He later on came close but was denied a brace. Kelly later got one back for the Nairobi team but it might have been a little too late.

Both fans were visibly uncomfortable with several decisions made by the referee. The crowd voiced their frustrations but they fell on deaf ears. Despited the heated game there was sign of indiscipline and no red cards were awarded.

Some key players that usually make a difference had to sit this one out as Daystar City new head coach made bold changes.

The game ended 2-1, a triumphant win for Athi Rivers team and a deflating loss for Daystar City FC.

Other than the scorching 1 pm sun and the lack of shade and adequate benches for the fans, it was an interesting derby encounter that delighted the fans.

  • From Falcons to Chipu: Meet the Daystarians Tearing it up at the International Stage

Geylord Ngasi, Eddy Wambugu and Mike Oduor are living the dream at the world rugby under 20 trophy tournament with the world’s best. The Daystar Falcons players have had the privilege to transition from university rugby to tearing it up at the international stage.

The trio’s journey has been nothing but incredible. Geylord Ngasi’s rugby journey began when he joined the Daystar Falcons just a year ago. He faced several challenges as a newcomer with limited prior training. However, his determination and perseverance led him to become a promising player on the team.

After hearing about the Daystar rugby trials, Geylord decided to give it a shot, and luck was on his side as he earned a scholarship with the school. As a rookie, he had to prove himself during the preseason training sessions. His hard work and dedication didn’t go unnoticed, and he gained recognition from the coach.

Despite falling ill during the first match of the season, Geylord’s debut came in the second match, and he continued to impress on the field. Adapting to the competitive environment of Athi River proved to be a challenge, but he pushed himself out of his comfort zone to excel.

Geylord’s ambition didn’t stop at the school level. With aspirations of playing for Chipu (the Kenya Under-20 national rugby team), he trained relentlessly, drawing from the experience of the training sessions before joining the Daystar Falcons. His efforts paid off, as he secured a spot on the national team, an achievement he never imagined possible.

Reflecting on his journey, Geylord humbly acknowledges the invaluable lessons learned both on and off the field. Playing against skilled opponents has taught him to seek guidance and learn from others, leading to personal growth and improvement in his game.

This kind of experience is what anyone playing rugby would wish for. It’s so humbling yet also a lesson. As you are in the game I mean you meet someone playing that same position as you and you are like this guy knows what he is doing. You reach out at the end of the game and you learn a few things from the opposition and yet from my own teammates who I’ve socialized with them and I’ve come to learn alot. When I started my rugby journey I would never have imagined that I would get to experience such

Michael Oduor is another exciting export for Daystar Falcons. He has played for Daystar Falcons for two seasons now. In those two years, one of rugby’s biggest young prospect has made tremendous progress. Oduor delved in to just how big a part Daystar Falcons played in preparing him to represent his country on the international stage.

Falcons imenisaidia juu, you know the coach anajua, your strength anakushow hapo hivo what you are capable of and if you execute it hio ndio kitu wa anangalia huku kwa national team.

Oduor made the switch from university rugby to national rugby. Many might fold under the pressure, but the young lad relishes the gusto of competing with the big boys. He compares his university rugby experience and that of the international stage and says it is indeed very different.

He shares how the pressure to perform when the cameras are on you and the nation is behind you was a bit overwhelming at first. He however grew into it and he’s not looked back ever since. The young lad has had to hone his skills to be able to hold position number 2 for the Chipu. A position which he says is not short of it’s challenges.

Unajua mimi ni hooker, I play position number two and kama hooker, ball ikitoka, off the line I need to throw the ball back. Na kama kuna pressure mingi and I lose my concentration, hapo I end up ni methrow ball not straight and that’s a penalty against us.

Having made such a huge milestone and a big switch to national rugby, just what does the future hold for some of rugby’s biggest prospect? Well the young lads have set their sight on the Shujaa and hope to make the switch from U20 rugby.

It is incredible how greatness often emerges from such humble beginnings. Our rugby stars’ journey is just beginning. As they continue their rugby journey, Geylord Ngasi and Mike Oduor stands as a testament to the power of dedication and hard work.

In a highly charged and action-packed football match, spectators were treated to a rollercoaster of emotions as Daystar Falcons and Daystar City battled it out. The game, held at the Bethel Grounds lived up to its hype, featuring incredible goals, contentious decisions, and moments of pure excitement.

The match kicked off with both teams displaying their attacking prowess from the outset. Daystar City’s Nathan had an early opportunity to open the scoring. However, much to the disappointment of the travelling fans, his goal was disallowed. The decision sparked debates among fans, but the match referee stood firm with her decision.

The home team, not to be outdone, quickly capitalized on the momentum shift. Madede, broke through City’s defense with a brilliant effort, to put Falcons ahead after being set up by a cutback cross from fellow teammate Mike. The home fans erupted in jubilation.

Shortly after, Falcons would double their lead again through Madede who was set up by Musanka. Musanka lashed on to a paried away save after City failed to clear the ball.

As the first half drew to a close, Mike would add to his assist and put the home side 3 goals to the good with a stunning header on goal after teammate mida mida found him with a cross. The stadium erupted with cheers.

The second half began with even more intensity, as both teams sought to gain the upper hand. City piled the pressure on Falcons early on in the second half and would get their reward as Abubbakar’s effort found the back of the net.

Falcons would bring City goalkeeper, Ken Andrew into action forcing a double save that kept City in the match. City’s onslaught would see another goal disallowed when Deng found the back of the net but the referee again called foul play.

City’s spirited fight in the second half could not help mount a comeback as Falcons saw out the game holding on to their two-goal lead and taking the campus bragging rights.

  • Falcons defy expectations and shine at Kabeberi 7s

    By Ken Andrew

    kenakikenyi@gmail.com

The Daystar Falcons rugby team managed to impress many at the Kabeberi 7s despite bowing out in the 5th place semi final. The Falcons began their journey with a loss against Kenya Cup side Top Fry Nakuru but that did not set the tone for the day. They managed to win their next two games 12-5 and 12-24 against the famous Impala Saracens and Northern Suburbs respectively.  The two wins put them through to the main cup quarterfinal where they met Kenya Cup perennial contenders Homeboyz Rugby. Homeboyz proved to be a handful for the Falcons as they took the game 34-7 sending the Falcons to the 5th place playoff. Sunday was most definitely not their day as after the quarterfinal, they narrowly lost to Masinde Muliro University 17 -12, bringing their run in the Kabeberi 7s to an end.

Despite their unlucky end to the tournament, many were impressed by the Falcons’ performances. With a lighter squad than the 15s, the selected team managed to hold their own against multiple Kenya Cup teams. Debutant Patrick Odongo shone and managed to be the top try scorer after playing all five games.  Without doubt, he still has a lot more to give as the Falcons head into the Christie 7s next weekend.

Coach Caleb Bosire was proud of his squad and saw the experience gained as vital for their 7s season progression.  He also praised Patrick Odongo for his stellar performances on the pitch.

The Falcons head back to the RFUEA grounds on 28th and 29th May for the Christie 7s. Having secured a first quarterfinal tie since 2013, they will be looking to improve and maybe make the semis. The experience they gain from 7s will be crucial as they head to the KRU Championship next season.

    Bring on the Christie 7s!
