  • Reinventing fashion one day at a time

    By Chelangat Caren,

Fashion is no longer dictated by seasons alone. It
is shaped daily—by mood, movement and the
changing rhythm of modern life. Reinventing
fashion today is less about dramatic
    transformations and more about small,
thoughtful choices made one day at a time.

Across cities and communities, style has become
deeply personal. People are mixing old with new,
pairing thrifted finds with tailored staples, and
reworking pieces already in their wardrobes. A
jacket worn differently, a scarf tied with intention,
or shoes chosen for comfort as much as style—
these quiet decisions are redefining what it
    means to be fashionable.

Sustainability has played a central role in this
shift. Consumers are becoming more aware of
where their clothes come from and how they are
made. Fast fashion’s quick fixes are slowly giving
way to longer-lasting pieces that tell a story.
Repairing, reusing and restyling have become
acts of creativity rather than compromise.

Designers, too, are rethinking their approach. Many are focusing on versatile designs that
transition easily from day to night and season to season. Clean lines, quality fabrics and
thoughtful craftsmanship are taking precedence over fleeting trends. Fashion is being
built to last—not just physically, but emotionally.

Beauty trends mirror this evolution. The emphasis has shifted toward authenticity, with
people embracing their natural features and unique identities. Style is no longer about
fitting into a mould, but about standing comfortably in one’s own skin. Confidence has
    become the most powerful accessory.

Social media continues to influence fashion, but its role has softened. Instead of
dictating what to wear, it now inspires experimentation. Everyday individuals—office
workers, creatives, parents and students—are setting trends simply by showing up as
themselves. Fashion has become more inclusive, more accessible and more real.

Reinventing fashion one day at a time means dressing with intention. It is about choosing
pieces that reflect who you are and how you live. It is about allowing style to evolve
    naturally, without pressure or perfection.

In this new era, fashion is not a performance. It is a daily practice—quietly rewritten with
every outfit, every choice, and every step forward.

  • Between Rent, Food and Hope

    By Chelangat Caren,

Somewhere between paying rent, buying food and topping up mobile data, many Kenyans have quietly
realised that survival itself has become a full-time occupation.

The cost of living is no longer a headline—it is a daily conversation in matatus, markets and office corridors.
It shows up in smaller shopping bags, postponed plans and difficult household choices. For many families,
the month now feels longer than the money, no matter how carefully it is stretched.

Food prices remain the most unforgiving. A trip to the market that once felt routine now requires mental
arithmetic and compromise. You pick this and drop that. You buy less. You promise yourself it’s temporary.
But “temporary” has dragged on for months.

For young people, the pressure cuts even deeper. Jobs are scarce, and those available often pay just enough
to get by, but not enough to build a future. Many graduates juggle short-term contracts, side hustles and
unpaid internships, all while being told they should be grateful for “experience.” The result is a generation
that is constantly busy, yet perpetually uncertain.

Small businesses—the backbone of the economy—are also feeling the squeeze. Rising electricity bills, higher
transport costs and reduced consumer spending have forced some traders to close shop earlier, downsize, or
shut down altogether. Behind every closed kiosk is a family recalibrating its hopes.

Government assurances have not always landed where they were meant to. While policy statements and
budget speeches speak of long-term fixes, wananchi live in the short term—today’s fare, tonight’s meal, this
week’s rent. There is a growing gap between economic language and lived reality, and it is breeding
    frustration.

    frustration.

What makes this moment particularly delicate is fatigue. People are tired—not just physically, but
emotionally. They are tired of adjusting, coping and “being resilient.” Resilience, after all, was never
    meant to replace stability.

Yet even in this strain, something quietly Kenyan persists. People still help each other. Neighbours
extend small favours. Families share what little they have. Humour survives, often dark, sometimes
defiant. It is how many cope when answers are slow in coming.

But goodwill alone cannot carry an economy. At some point, policies must translate into relief that is
felt, not just announced. Jobs must be created that pay living wages. Taxes must be balanced with the
realities of ordinary households. Dialogue must replace dismissal when citizens raise concerns.

The true measure of economic recovery will not be found in graphs or projections, but in kitchens,
classrooms and shop counters. It will be seen when survival stops feeling like work—and life begins to
    feel livable again.

  • Sleepless on Duty: The Health Risks of Night Shifts

    By Chelangat Caren,

Working the night shift has a myriad health hazards. Besides dark mood swings and severed
social and family life, there is also unpredictable work-life balance and burn-out.

Done with heart rhythms, leading to heart problems, the most common being the Ischemic
heart disease that is caused by inadequate supply of oxygen and blood.

People likely to work the night shift include security guards, cops, soldiers, long-
distance transporters, late night radio presenters, customer service operators, airline crew,
    doctors and nurses.

The Covid-19 pandemic, which made many people to work from home, also had others working
longer into the wee hours. The most affected are those in essential services, including
journalists, who have ‘the graveyard shift’. But majority of those working remotely fail to
manage working hours, an issue that increases working hours.

Take Collins Ajwang’, a nurse at Jaramogi Oginga Teaching and Referal Hospital, in Kisumu, for
    instance.

Ajwang’ works for six nights in a month, hours that also have high work volume. During night
shifts, he reports to work at around 6pm, and leaves at 10am the next day.

Ajwang’ manages a ward with 50 patients, together with his colleague, and roles entail
receiving admissions, handling emergencies, besides feeding, stabilising, and giving medication
    to patients.

This can lead to burn-out, considering “volume of work at night is heavy, as compared to during
the day, when patients can be cared for by their relatives,” says Ajwang’, who adds that though
he sleeps during the day, he is often interrupted as “noise from neighborhood and family
demands cannot allow me to relax enough.” With a lot of work and associated risks during night
shifts, Ajwang’, also the Nurses Association of Kenya, Kisumu branch chairperson, says the
government should increase risk and extraneous allowances for nurses.

Not only is the nurse predisposed to fatigue, but recent research reveals working the night shift
deprives employees of sleep and most also risk contracting heart related diseases. This can be
    fatal.

  • AT THE MERCY OF THE BORDER

    By Chelangat Caren,

By the time the sun begins to dip behind the sugarcane fields of western Kenya, the highway outside
Malaba takes on a life of its own. Engines hum softly, radios crackle with old rhumba tunes, and men in
grease-stained overalls stretch their legs beside trucks that have not moved for hours—sometimes days.

For the uninitiated, the sight is baffling: kilometres upon kilometres of articulated lorries frozen in place,
like a metallic snake basking in the heat. But for the drivers, this is familiar territory. This is the slow lane
of life, where time bends and patience becomes both skill and survival instinct.

David Mwangi knows this road too well. Perched high in the cabin of his truck at Kocholya market, he
watches the world pass him by—hawkers weaving between tyres, boda boda riders darting through
narrow gaps, and children staring wide-eyed at machines bigger than their homes. His destination,
Malaba border, is just 11 kilometres away. Yet that short distance can take two days on a good run.

“You learn to live one hour at a time,” he says with a shrug, as if discussing the weather. “If you think too
far ahead, you’ll lose your mind.”

To pass the time, drivers trade stories the way others trade phone numbers. Tales of breakdowns in the
Rift Valley, near misses with wandering cattle, and the eternal mystery of customs delays are shared over
cups of overly sweet tea from roadside kiosks. Laughter comes easily here—perhaps because it has to.
Without it, the long waits would be unbearable.

The trucks, for all their size and noise, have quietly shaped the towns they pass through. Where they stop, businesses bloom. Food stalls appear overnight. Mechanics set up
shop under trees. Women balance trays of fruit on their heads, calling out prices with the confidence of seasoned marketers. A driver may be stuck for hours, but he will not go
    hungry.

As evening falls, the border towns take on a different rhythm. Chapati sizzle on open pans, beans simmer slowly, and conversations stretch late into the night. Some traders
spread blankets beside their stalls and sleep there, ready to serve the next early riser. The border never truly sleeps; it merely dozes with one eye open.

There is also a quieter, less visible world that thrives in these spaces. Small-scale traders slip back and forth across invisible lines, carrying bananas, groundnuts, or cassava. It is
a trade built on trust, hustle and an intimate understanding of prices on either side. For many women, it has become a lifeline—paying school fees, putting food on the table,
and offering a measure of independence in uncertain times.

For the drivers, dawn brings renewed hope. Perhaps today the line will move faster. Perhaps the paperwork will be stamped without fuss. Engines roar back to life one by one,
and the metallic snake inches forward.

And if it doesn’t? Well, there’s always another story to tell, another song on the radio, another cup of tea by the roadside. On this highway, life is not measured in kilometres, but
    in moments patiently endured.

  • WAPOA SZN 2: The Sequel

    By Teddy Otieno,

With a rollout that began with the release of the lead singles “Me & U,” “Talk to Me Nice,” and “Name,” coupled with a string of social media teasers, anticipation for WAPOA SZN 2 was palpable. Big Yasa made it clear early on: a third album was in the works, and this second instalment mattered.

I received WAPOA SZN 2 on a Thursday, exactly one week before its official release on July 30. The first file was faulty, prompting Philip Koth to resend the album, this time split into twelve separate attachments. An unceremonious delivery, perhaps, but fitting for a project that reveals itself gradually.

I have lived with this album for months. I’ve listened to it early in the morning and late at night, in a matatu on my way home, with friends, as background music, on my home theatre, just on repeat. This album has been a companion. It is for and about women, and I’ve allowed it to soundtrack my own shifting emotions toward different women in my life. It feels like a diary of moods, snapshots of intimacy, longing, bravado, reflection, and love.

    The Sequel Effect

Album sequels are a double-edged sword. They give an artist the opportunity to deepen a concept or extend a narrative, but they also carry the weight of living up to a prequel that listeners already hold dear.

WAPOA SZN, released in 2024, marked a significant departure for Yasa, from raw drill into a calmer, emotionally vulnerable persona. It was as if he had revealed an alter ego. Love, relationships, and emotional introspection replaced bravado.

That softness was briefly interrupted by the release of the Mad Clan Tape in October 2024, a collaborative project by the Kibera-based Mad Clan rap unit. Here, Yasa returned to drill, flanked by Spinx Mafia, Ngovo Das, Sumbua, Madiko, and Obeezy. The tape delivered sixteen aggressive, high-energy rap tracks. Iyanah Kiragu was the sole featured vocalist, adding moments of femininity and acoustic texture.

Released seventeen months after its predecessor, WAPOA SZN 2 cements Yasa’s sonic pivot. He doubles down on emotion, vulnerability, and melody. If the first album was an introduction, the sequel is a refinement.

    Sound and Bars

Produced entirely by Hatikvah Murage, WAPOA SZN 2 clocks in at just under thirty minutes across twelve tracks. I’m no expert in music production, so I won’t pretend to dissect the technical details. Hatikvah himself has shared breakdowns on Instagram for those interested.

What stands out is the intentional minimalism. The production gives Yasa’s husky voice, sometimes rapped, sometimes sung, ample room to breathe. The album carries a nocturnal, mood-heavy sound that sits comfortably between R&B, alternative hip-hop, and rap.

At his core, Big Yasa is a rapper, and experimentation doesn’t exempt him from the fundamental metric of the genre: pen game. Rap is a sport. Your writing determines how seriously you’re taken. What distinguishes Yasa here is his simplicity. It’s difficult to explain without listening, the bars are unpretentious yet effective. He writes from lived emotion, and you can feel it. His delivery is effortless, almost as if he’s strolling alongside the beat rather than chasing it.

Track list: For the Women, With the Women

The title WAPOA, slang for “fine ladies,” sets the agenda. This is an album built around feminine presence, both thematically and literally. Of the eight featured artists, five are women: N’Jiru, Osa Nkiru, Andia Sande, Venna, and Sailor Goon. Their contributions add melody, perspective, and tonal contrast. Many of the songs unfold like conversations rather than performances.

Ajay and Pappi Mulla are the only artists to return from the first WAPOA SZN. Luo trap artist Wuod Baba closes the album with the outro.

Thematically, WAPOA SZN 2 explores intimacy in its many forms, lust, dancefloor chemistry, tenderness, trust, and loss. Women function as muse, mirror, and measure of self.

I spoke with Yasa in October during the build-up to the album’s first live performance. We met in Makina, Kibera after a planned live band rehearsal was postponed. When I asked why he chose to have Hatikvah produce the entire album, he simply said, “Hatikvah anaielewa.” Hatikvah gets it.

He also revealed that, with the exception of Sailor Goon, all collaborators physically linked up in the studio. There’s an authenticity that comes from shared space, something you can hear in the music. At the time – October, he told me Concentrate was the track he had on repeat.

    Conclusion

WAPOA SZN 2 is a curation of moods. It is an album of fragments, brief, intense, sometimes unresolved moments of intimacy that mirror the nature of relationships themselves.

The project feels deliberate and well thought out. Big Yasa proves that his vulnerability is not a gimmick but a genuine artistic evolution. This is an album that belongs to women in voice, in theme, and in inspiration. It also belongs to men who are learning how to feel, to admit distraction, and to love openly while still holding on to the bravado of being a hustler.

  • Kenyan David Munyua Stuns the World at PDC World Championship

    By Joe Aura, aurajoe6@gmail.com,

Kenya announced itself on darts’ grandest stage on Thursday night as David Munyua produced one of the biggest upsets in PDC World Championship history, defeating world No. 18 Mike De Decker 3–2 at Alexandra Palace in London.

The 30-year-old from Murang’a, a full-time veterinarian and part-time darts player, became the first African to win a match at the PDC Worlds after overturning a two-set deficit against the Belgian star. Munyua dramatically sealed the victory, landing a nerveless 135 checkout on the bullseye in the deciding set, despite De Decker posting the higher match average.

“It’s a huge moment for Kenya and for Africa,” Munyua said after the match. “Nobody is guaranteed victory beforehand in sports, so I told myself I would give it my all.”

Munyua’s journey to the world stage is as remarkable as the result itself. Just three years ago, he had never thrown a dart competitively. The introduction came in the most unlikely of places—a local bar, where a friend stepped up to the oche during a casual evening out. Curious, Munyua joined in. The next day, he bought a dartboard. Soon after, his friend encouraged him to try small local tournaments.

“I was just playing because of friendships and sportsmanship,” Munyua has often said. Professional ambition was not the initial goal.

Fast forward to 2025, and Munyua is Africa’s leading darts player. He qualified for the World Championship by winning the African Darts Group Qualifier, claiming six consecutive victories, including an 8–6 final win with an average of 83.16. His highest tournament average peaked at 86.82 in the quarter-finals, confirming his growing consistency.

On the PDC stage, Munyua showed remarkable composure for a debutant. After losing the first two sets to De Decker—the reigning World Grand Prix champion—he did not panic. He survived three match darts in the fourth set, produced a perfect six-dart start in one leg, and steadily clawed his way back into the contest.

By the time the final set arrived, the Kenyan looked anything but overawed. With the score finely balanced, Munyua stepped up and delivered the decisive 135 checkout, igniting the Alexandra Palace crowd and writing his name into darts folklore.

“It was do-or-die. I could not feel my hands, but in my mind, I wanted to show the whole world that there is talent in Africa.”

Statistically, Munyua’s rise has been rapid. Over the past 12 months, he has averaged 75.05, recorded 21 maximum 180s, achieved a highest checkout of 153, and won 56.39 per cent of legs overall—figures that underline his competitiveness at the elite level.

Nicknamed “Why Not,” Munyua walked out to the oche to Mwaki by Sofiya Nzau and Zerb. He will face Japanese Motomu Sakau next in the second round. As Munyua continues a journey that began in a bar, he has now captured the imagination of a continent. His journey is proof that sometimes, all it takes is the courage to ask, why not?

  • UP, DOWNS AND FIRSTS — Lando Norris’ journey to the top.

    By Nafisa Najmi,

‘Next year is going to be my year!’ Lando Norris triumphantly said those words into his radio after the final race of the 2024 season in Abu Dhabi, which he won. Norris finished second in the 2024 driver standings, marking his best championship finish.

One year later, the British driver secured his first Driver’s Championship after finishing third in the penultimate Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He secured the title by just two points ahead of four-time and defending champion Max Verstappen.

The 2025 Formula One season came to an end, with McLaren securing the Constructor’s Championship for the second year in a row. With an upcoming regulations change, this season was vital for data collection and understanding the cars, with next year promising to be even tougher.

There were numerous unknowns entering this season. The big headline heading into the season opener in Australia was undoubtedly Lewis Hamilton moving to Ferrari. However, Lando Norris kept his head down and won the wet Australian Grand Prix, which wasn’t short of crashes and drama. This first win set a marker that Norris meant business in 2025.

Things seemed positive after the strong start in Australia. However, the British driver finished in second in back-to-back races – the Chinese and Japanese GP, and didn’t cross the line first until May when he won the Monaco GP. McLaren had car issues, and Lando even reported that at one time, it felt like he had never driven an F1 car. Despite the struggles, Lando had 2 wins and placed P4 as his worst result.

His consistency took a hit when a miscalculated overtake on his teammate for a P4, through the fast and narrow corners of the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, Montréal. The McLaren of Lando Norris hit the barricades and ended his race with just 4 more racing laps to go. Things started to look a little unsure about Lando’s chances at the title.

However, Lando came fighting with back-to-back wins, one being on home turf at Silverstone. He then finished P2 in Belgium before snatching a miraculous win in Hungary, where he pulled off an incredible one-stop strategy while rivals opted for two. A nerve-wracking last few laps had his teammate and Championship rival, Oscar Piastri, chasing with fresher tyres and better grip. Lando showcased a masterclass in defence and tyre management and bagged the win.

Lando walked into the Dutch GP with a mere 9-point deficit to his rival, but unfortunately, luck wasn’t on his side. He got a DNF caused by a mechanical issue, which saw a 34-point gap between him and his title dreams. Speculations, rumours, and fanfare had already seemed to decide the championship winner, but Lando Norris had other plans.

He came back feisty after the summer break and was ready to fight for the grand prize. Determination and consistency saw Lando Norris retake the lead that he lost in Bahrain at the Mexico Grand Prix, where he came out on top by 1 point.

With the final 4 races of the season in view, Lando proved dominant and unstoppable. The  Brazilian GP, which was a weekend to forget in 2024, turned into one to remember as Lando took maximum points – winning both the sprint and main race.

However, in Formula 1, it is not over until it is over. The final triple header of the season was nothing short of drama. The Las Vegas grand prix saw both McLaren drivers, who were title contenders, face a gruesome disqualification. What would’ve been a 30-point lead turned into a 24-point gap between him and Piastri and Verstappen, who were now tied.

A wrong call by McLaren at the penultimate Qatar GP left both drivers vulnerable as Piastri finished second with Norris fourth. The champion would have to be crowned in Abu Dhabi, the final Grand Prix of the season.

Apart from the P7 finish in Azerbaijan and the unfortunate DNFs and disqualification, the Brit showed skill and consistency, bagging 7 race wins and 17 podiums. Now he only needed one more podium to win the Driver’s Championship.

The Yas Marina circuit buzzed with anticipation as the five lights signalled the start, all three title contenders starting at the front. Lando Norris started second but let his teammate Oscar pass. They had different strategies; Lando wanted to maintain a podium, while Piastri wanted the win.

With the Scarlet red Ferrari of Charles Leclerc in Norris’ mirrors, McLaren had to rethink their strategy to help him maintain third place. Lando was quick to ensure a pitstop gap was maintained and the risk of undercut from Charles Leclerc, who was also aiming for a podium finish, was avoided. Lando’s first pit stop had him rejoin a DRS train of traffic led by Yuki Tsunoda.

The Briton showed quick overtakes and stayed calm under pressure. Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari pushed hard for P3, but Norris remained calm, built a seven-second gap before he crossed the chequered flag as world champion, with a two-point gap over Verstappen in the final standings.

Through his hard work, sweat and tears (literally), the Briton achieved his childhood dream. Lando became the 35th driver to become a Formula 1 World Champion, the first non-Redbull or Mercedes driver to win it since 2009, and the 11th British driver to have his name etched into the trophy.

7 years later since the 19-year-old joined F1, Lando Norris became the first F2 graduate to subsequently win a Formula 1 world championship and the 8th Driver in a McLaren to do so. In 2024, he had the unpopular record of being the driver with the most podiums but no wins, which he got rid of in the 2024 Miami GP. Now he is the world champion. In the words of Carlos Sainz, “He has proven you can achieve your highest goals by staying true to yourself.”

  • A “Monumental Betrayal”: The Controversy Over 2026 World Cup Ticket Prices

    By Javan O. Ekhalie,

The excitement for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, recently hit a sour note. A global outcry from fans and advocacy groups erupted after FIFA revealed a ticket pricing structure that many labelled “extortionate” and a “betrayal” of the working-class supporters who make the sport what it is.

Following days of intense pressure, FIFA executed a rare U-turn, introducing a new tier of affordable tickets. However, as the dust settles, many are asking: is this a genuine fix, or just a PR bandage?

The Initial Shock: Pricing Out the Average Fan

The controversy began when FIFA released the initial pricing details to national federations. Fans were stunned to discover that the cost of attending matches had skyrocketed compared to previous tournaments like Qatar 2022.

    • The Sticker Shock: Reports indicated that the cheapest seats for the World Cup Final in New Jersey were priced at a staggering $4,185 (Ksh 539,865).
    • Following Your Team: For a dedicated fan hoping to follow their national team from the opening match through to the final, the estimated cost for tickets alone—excluding travel and hotels—was projected to exceed $6,900 (Ksh 890,100).
    • Dynamic Pricing: Adding fuel to the fire was the use of “dynamic pricing,” a model common in US sports where prices fluctuate based on demand. This meant a group stage match involving a star-studded team like Argentina or Brazil could see prices surge well beyond the advertised face value, with some opening match tickets reportedly reaching up to $2,735 (Ksh 352,815).

Football Supporters Europe (FSE), a representative body for fans, issued a scathing statement calling the pricing a “monumental betrayal of the tradition of the World Cup.”They argued that FIFA was treating loyal supporters as cash cows rather than the heartbeat of the tournament.

    The Climbdown: A $60 “Fix”

Facing a PR nightmare and threats of boycotts from organized supporter groups, FIFA blinked. In a sudden announcement this week, the governing body revealed a new “Supporter Entry Tier” of tickets.

Under this revised plan, a limited number of tickets for every match, including the final, will be sold at a fixed price of $60 (Ksh 7,740).

FIFA stated this move was designed to “reward loyal fans” and ensure that the tournament remained accessible. On the surface, dropping the price of a final ticket from over $4,000 (Ksh 516,000) to just $60 (Ksh 7,740) seems like a massive victory for fan power.

The Catch: Reading the Fine Print

While the headline figure is attractive, the reality is more complex. Critics have pointed out that the allocation for these cheap tickets is incredibly small.

    • The Numbers: The $60 tickets reportedly make up only 10% of the specific allocation given to national federations.
    • The Reality: Since national federations are only allocated about 8% of the total stadium capacity, the “cheap” tickets amount to roughly 0.8% of the total seats in the stadium.
    • The Odds: For a stadium holding 80,000 people, this means fewer than 700 tickets would be available at the $60 (Ksh 7,740) price point, leaving the vast majority of fans fighting for the standard, expensive seats that still cost hundreds or thousands of dollars.

The lowering of entry-level prices proves that organized fan pressure works. However, the scarcity of these affordable tickets suggests that for the majority of global football fans, the 2026 World Cup remains a luxury event, priced far out of reach for the average supporter.
