The communication was made by the office of the Speaker of Congress Evans Owino. Having failed to adhere to the values expected from him as a student leader in Daystar University and the DUSA Congress voting against him, Desmond Mwyne was declared unfit to hold the S.G position.

  • Why Disney Should Be Stopped

    {nkathawainaina@gmail.com}

Disney played an integral part in setting standards for animations for decades, and in a few years, a whole century. It has risen to unbelievable heights, owning half of Hollywood ( I’m not joking, Google the companies Disney owns). With all its might and prowess, Disney can’t seem to get a live-action remake right!

A few weeks ago, a teaser for The Little Mermaid live-action movie was released. And it was a hit! Before I go on, you might be wondering what a live-action movie is. This is action in films involving real people or animals, as contrasted with animation or computer generated effects. And Disney has been on a roll making such movies, especially if the animation did really well.

I can bet that barely a handful of serious Disney fans and self-proclaimed critics have watched the original movies. To make this observation as accurate and original as possible for you my dear reader, I have been taking a walk down memory lane, watching the original Disney movies from all the way back to the early 1900’s when Walt Disney was writing the stories himself! If you have a moment, you might want to check out those movies. The kind of production they were doing, with the kind of technology that was in existence then, mind blowing and you kind of understand why they have a monopoly in the industry today.

Back to The Little Mermaid, it blew up the internet for one reason only. Ariel, the mermaid the movie is based on, is being played by Halle Bailey. Halle is an African American actress and singer. ‘Black Twitter’, (black users on twitter) could not contain their excitement. Regular Twitter ( white people) could also not suppress their dismay at Disney for casting a woman of colour for the role. And a war begun. Why am I telling you all this? I think The Little Mermaid live-action remake will be a bigger success than the other remakes because of only one reason, the black community will come out in numbers to support their own, and white people will show up to prove it was a bad idea casting a black woman.

Looking at Disney’s track record for their remakes, is quite telling. The Lion King released in 2019 for one, is among the lowest ranked of the nineteen remakes even though it grossed 1.9 billion dollars in box offices. I wasn’t very invested in The Lion King. Apparently it was the biggest thing in the ‘90s next to Destiny’s Child and Tupac. Those who watched it then were mad at the live action remake. “They didn’t do the movie justice “, said one disappointed fan. Mulan also received negative reviews and people said ‘it lost the point of the original movie’. Cinderella has had countless remakes only two doing exceedingly well. I enjoyed The Beauty and the Beast, but people still had a problem with it. The list goes on and on from Aladdin, to the most recent Pinocchio, which was devastatingly bad. The only one which was spared from ridicule is The Jungle Book, which ranked highest at 94% according to Rotten Tomatoes with little negative reviews. What are the odds that the Disney live-action remake writers have figured out where they are going wrong and changed it in The Little Mermaid? And that is why Disney should be stopped.

As much as people complain, we still go ahead and watch the remakes. Perhaps that’s what is keeping them going or the insane amounts of money they make. Who can tell for sure. This, however, is just a theory. The Little Mermaid might shock us.

  • THE DRUG THAT IS ONLINE SHOPPING

    By Nkatha Wainaina
    (nkathawainaina@gmail.com)

Online shopping, the sweet and sour borderline addiction that might lead me to probable bankruptcy.
Remember the good old days when we would walk into a shop, survey what was on display, look at the items from all angles possible, bargaining to a price that even you know is a little too low because your mother taught you well, then finally taking it home with you? Aah simpler times.
Yes. I know the argument. Online shopping has made things so much easier and literally brings convenience to your doorstep (Someone should use that as a tagline for a delivery app. Call me for more marketing ideas). And I concur. For indecisive people, people who don’t like going outside unless they really have to, or those who don’t like the hustle and bustle of a market place, this has been a life saver. However, are the repercussions worth it?

I had refused to give into pressure from all the advertisements on my social media pages. Clearly, I gave in. If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be writing this. I remember the first item I bought online. It was a lovely peach top that I thought could be worn on different occasions. If you haven’t seen how many shops advertise clothes, let me break it down for you. They fold tops at the bottom to form a v-shape, so you can’t really see how the bottom looks like or estimate where it would reach. Dresses are pinched at the waist to give a symmetrical shape. This is the most deceiving and slightly annoying thing out there. So my beautiful peach top turned out to be a crop top. This would not have been such a problem if I wore crop tops. It took me a whole year before I finally got the courage to wear it.

They say two times are enough to learn not to repeat a mistake. I’m afraid my dear reader, this has gone on far beyond two times. I got a stunning black and white checked dress that had rust stains on the white parts. The page, regardless of having thousands of followers, ignored my complaint and refused to reimburse me.

I bought an oversized dress that now sits patiently in my closet, waiting for me to get pregnant so that I can wear it as a maternity dress. I must get my money’s worth!

I walked around Nairobi looking a for a shop that was advertising good looking leather boots for a suspiciously low price, only for the shop to turn out to be a front for coning gullible ladies with an eye for gorgeous boots. I am glad I hadn’t paid for them yet! My sister bought a cupcake baking tin from an overseas shop for a price that was so low she couldn’t let the opportunity slide. The baking tin surely did arrive, but it was part of a child’s plastic play set.

These are all experiences I have witnessed first hand and yet I can’t stop buying things online. I mean, the experiences aren’t all bad. I have gotten a couple of decent purchases online.

In the age of mobile banking, we have access to all the money we have and don’t have at the palm of our hands. This gives me the impression that I can buy whatever I want, whenever I want. This is a problem because when I log into my social media accounts, the algorithm ensures I see new items that I would like based on my previous post interactions. This is why I’m worried that my guilty pleasure will make me bankrupt.

Send me tips on how I can control this. At least I have the first step to recovery down. Acceptance right?

    By Nicole Waweru

    (Email: wanjirunicole28@gmail.com)

On Monday 17, October, the selection parliamentary committee began vetting President William Ruto’s Cabinet nominees. The nominees are; Musalia Mudavadi, the former Amani National Congress (ANC) leader with a net worth of ksh.4 billion, Justin Muturi, former speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya with a net worth of ksh.700million, Aden Duale, Garissa Township Member of Parliament (MP) with a net worth of ksh.851 million, Alfred Mutua, the former Governor of Machakos County with a net worth of kshs.420 million, and Alice Wahome, the MP of Kandara in Murang’a County with ksh.218 million.

Shock hit Kenyans after the immeasurable wealth of these nominees was revealed in Parliament, this sparked a conversation on Twitter as many Kenyans said that the politics in Kenya is very remunerative. In as much as some had worn the lens of ‘politics being lucrative,’ others had however accredited their wealth to corruption, which is still not a surprise. Some were questioned about their past encounters with corruption scandals like Mudavadi, who was asked about the Goldenberg and Nairobi Cemetery land scams. For the Goldenberg scandal, he told the committee that he inherited the scam at the Treasury at its tail end and some of the transactions were unknown to him whereas, for the Nairobi Cemetery land scam, he said he faced a politically instigated investigation by the then Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission, (KACC) and in the end, the culprits were caught and jailed.

Looking at the wealth attained by these Cabinet nominees, we can see that their wealth is also constituted by separate and individual ventures that they carry out outside of politics. For example, one of the nominees, Justin Muturi, says that his income comes from the pension he is earning after serving as a speaker of the National Assembly for ten years, from farming and legal consultancy. He also added that his property was acquired through bank loans and a civil servant stipend for the last 36 years of his career.

The vetting and nomination process in Kenya is seen to be very orderly, the 12th Parliament amended the Public Approval and Parliamentary Approval Act 2011, to increase the vetting period from 14 days to 28 days. According to research from Mutai, (2022), once the Committee on Appointments receives the list of the Cabinet nominees, the clerk will be required to issue a public notice asking Kenyans with representations to submit memoranda on the nominees. With the nomination process in Kenya, once the Parliament completes the vetting which is set to end by Saturday 2:30 pm, the clerk will notify the President of the decision made within seven days of the decision. Article 152 (1) of the Constitution says the Cabinet includes the President, the Deputy President, and the Attorney-General, and not fewer than 14 and not more than 22 Cabinet Secretaries. So, the question that has been the talk on all social media handles is, “Is politics profitable?” My answer to this is yes. It is no doubt that the Members of Parliament (MPs) in Kenya are amongst the highest paid in the world relative to the size of the economy. Parliament seats are one of the most coveted positions in Kenya this is supported by the holder’s wealth and social ranking. In the years before, there has been an evident trend of those in high senior private sectors leaving, in quest of more laid-back political offices.

As the ongoing vetting goes on, we hope that these nominees are very passionate about what they are fighting for right now, and when they are appointed, they will stick to their word and do fulfill all the promises that they have made. Their words are on record and I am sure many Kenyans will want to see them be true to their word.

  • WHO CAN BELL THE CAT ?

    By Caren Chelagat

Distant river banks and closed windows are witnesses

That pain cannot be written into lines

You’d probably misjudge my turbulent tides

    A p0rcelain pottery it seems

Delicate and feeble art it portrays

    Who can bell the cat?

Who can bound chains to the cat?

A fortitude threshold an intense pain

Everything looming bows down in the rain

    We are tied to chains

The cat is having to its fill

While we are left with nothing to even quench our thirst

    Deluge of information Flowing through

Conversations dripping too Sent by a deluge of mails

    Flipping through the mail box

The rule had been passed through

Each and everyone had a say through it

But no thought was taken through

The top head belonged to the top dogs

As they sailed through their say throughs

That was implemented on their orders

The followers were just but a tip through

To convey information to jut but get a through pass

As they hailed to the top dogs

    Without gaining truth

They just but followed with bitter truth through them

But their greed for promised toppings topped it all through

And they availed to follow it through.

Videogames can also be a great way to relax and unwind. Short and simple games like Angry birds are known to make you happier while videogames that are complex and deeply immersive can also be therapeutic . • MWYNE UNFILTERED

    By: Gertrude Prosper

    getrude2003@gmail.com

The Daystar University Students Association (DUSA) Secretary General Desmond Mwyne was summoned to appear at a hearing before the Congress on 18 October 2022 in Athi River, main campus.

The purpose was to address an offensive comment he posted on his social media, insulting D.U students. He was summoned by the council on multiple accounts of insulting students and solicitation of funds. In attendance were twenty-six members of Congress from both the main and Nairobi campus.

At the hearing chaired by the Speaker of the house, Evans Owino, Mwyne sat composed facing all members present. He was to explain in detail the use of the seven hundred thousand given to him by the finance manager to cater for the event.

“The money was spent on shirts, grounds, quality sound, a stage, food and buses and there were still some risk factors because we cannot scan loyalty”, he said. Without having brought receipts as proof, the council found his statement incomprehensive.

The Speaker then inquired who allowed the students to be charged sh.200 as an attendance fee and the S.G had the following to say. “I told the finance manager in front of my committee, by virtue that I don’t have the 900k I asked for the event, therefore for the 700k I will have to charge students, which she approved. We charged every student 200 each to meet certain expenses but still at the end of the event we had a debt of 55k.”

“We didn’t lock people out but the money we were allocated determined how many people would come,” Mwyne responded.

A dissatisfied student, Catherine, was in attendance as a witness. “I wasn’t very sure whether we were supposed to pay for the event, but after confirming with the SG I paid. Surprisingly, we were left by the bus and didn’t attend the event. I was shocked to hear the SG on the phone using vulgar language on us, saying “leave those people I don’t want unnecessary chaos” and yet he is the one who told us to pay”, she said.

The Speaker proceeded to read a screenshot of a conversation between a student inquiring about the event and Mwyne’s blatant rude response.

Forming beads of sweat on his nose and his hands unwillingly trembling, Mwyne accepted the impudent response to the inquisitive student but denied posting the above-quoted statement.

“We are living at a very crucial time where things are shared on the internet, and in the current era of so much information, therefore anyone can do that. I am a public figure and anyone can access my photos, therefore I never took those photos nor posted them though I saw them circulating”

The council is yet to decide on his fate.

  • PERCEPTION

    {Photo courtesy of PT}

    By Caren Chelangat

Perception is when we become aware of objects and events in the world through our various senses.

There is some way as humans we tend to judge people on our first sight at them the first meet up makes the first impression , we judge according to how we see people , how people carry themselves around and other times how people dress .

Communication is the process of passing information from one person to another we get to receive and give information through various channels .Our mood also strongly affects how we view people and events .

I learnt too that we should get to approach people fast before we actually assume what they are basing on our own thinking towards because as humans we tend to like look things through a times we are actually wrong with our thinking towards people and at other times we are actually good guessers.

Culture is the peoples way of life ,we should embrace our culture it is a mark of our identity as Africans as we emulated a lot of the western culture and we got to take it on as our own without necessarily remembering our roots .

The way we assume people whether they are smart , lazy or annoying is actually the way we will treat them and we should weigh things before we take action since we might actually be getting the wrong impression from them which is actually not it.

The kind of work we do actually gives us our own take of the world and we have various occupations in the planet so just like we all have different jobs in the world our view of the world is equally different amongst ourselves.

The old people view the world as a different angle because their own time the universe was still shabby and not yet modernized but now they are seeing it in a whole new different angle because during their time , the universe was actually a different thing.

The experience we go through makes us have a certain view on some things or some specific kind of people incase we encounter rude remarks from traffic policemen we will definitely presume all traffic police are rude .

The way we relate with people also determines how we will look at them the case of having a partner and assuming that he is just ignorant even he meant something in some other form of way we will automatically take the remark as ignorant because we just assume he or she is ignorant. Information must be arranged in some certain typa way that makes it have a meaning to the world as a whole.

Our mood depends on how we interact with others ;when a person is hungry and has been in the office the entire day definitely will have a bad mood due to the hunger and will interact with people in a moody way. We should interact with people after then we perceive their thoughts and all after an encounter with them.
